You stripped bare like a romantic dream,

    or a free, rebellious thought.

What love, then, so inspired in its visions,

has melted you with its poetic longings?

I imagine you as Eve after her departure,

    homeless in the worlds, bewildered,

while Adam has gone off to gather for her

from the earth its early fruits.

So she slept, oblivious to the universe and all beings,

like an iris in the blooming garden.

And she began, the gardens having forsaken her,

to live on the paradise of memory.

So, oh, if only I were a willow,

    shading your surging womanhood.

And oh, if only I were a flutter in the breeze,

    making your fragrant breaths shimmer.

    You sleep—oh, the languid beauty!

    And oh, its captivating charms!
