To your home, O my neighbor,

    good morning from my home.

A greeting: by saying it I seek nothing

    but the Creator's pleasure.

For He has enjoined, as you know,

a neighbor's heart to care for his neighbor.

And it is your right to be safe from

my sins and the dangers I bring.

And it is my right that you conceal

my shame, if my shame appears.

But before your eyes I lament

    the injustice of my days.

    Month passes after month,

    and year upon year,

yet you do not hear my moans,

    nor pity my pains.

    ز أعجنه بأحلامي

    I go hungry, while the bread is in your hands;

I knead it with my dreams,

and roll it out with my sighs,

and eat it with my illusions.

And, my neighbor, how many a night,

    dark as the grave,

has enfolded me in its pitch-dark robe,

with my children on my lap.

I rock them and make them weep,

and with them I mourn my life.

And you, of what we endure

    of pain, know nothing.

How near you are to my eye,

and how far from my poverty!

And I, neighbor, like other people, have

    a wife—how sweet she is!

And how harsh our two lives are

    in poverty, and how wretched!

She sees your wife in comfort

    that never leaves her world,

so she never ceases to lament my lot

with the tears her eyes shed.

And He who fashioned you fashioned me,

as He willed, and fashioned her.

And, my neighbor, the month has come

    that I alone know.

For my whole life is Ramadan—

    deprivation without limit.

    I fear when Eid comes,

as it has come upon my child.

And you have everything you hope for,

while my poverty is all I have.

    I fear when Eid comes

and my children call out to me:

    “Our father, life has passed,

and promises have made us miserable.

    ونحن أما لنا عيد

    Everyone has feast days;

and we—have we no feast day?

And how often you have told us, ‘Be patient,

for the Lord of mankind exists.’”

Nor does patience quench the burning thirst

    of deprivation for the wretched.

I fear for my soul's modesty,

lest I squander it in unbelief.

I fear for my wife's chastity,

lest she spill it under compulsion,

and that I wear the shame of time

after enduring patiently for an age,

so I kill for fear of destitution,

    or steal out of necessity,

    thus adding to my loss

more loss through what I do.

O my neighbor, I shall meet the Creator of

    Paradise and Hell.

I shall meet Him to bring my complaint against you to

    the court of the Almighty,

and ask Him, by the right of poverty,

to exact my vengeance for me.

Then, if you ask me for pardon,

    I shall forgive, without insisting,

for He has enjoined, as I know,

a neighbor's heart to care for his neighbor.
