This is your place in love, and mine:

though our homes differ, the two are close.

O soul of my dreams and spring of my thoughts,

and my desire in my joy and in my sorrows.

How I yearn for you, near and far,

your radiance veiled from my eyelids.

In your absence, night is my tavern, and my tears

my wine, and sorrow's phantoms my drinking companions.

Life carried us along according to its decrees,

between its bewilderment and its repose.

A soul that lives on beauty, and a thought—

immortality and divinity are among its mysteries.

Together we give darkness the radiance of our two hearts,

and turn the days away from their designs.

    فسلى رياح الموت عن آثارها

    We had a world, and its flowers withered;

so ask the winds of death about its traces.

Were it not for my burning in love and my faithfulness,

darkness would have enveloped my sanctity and my radiance.

    ما زلت أرثى أهلها ببكائي

    For on the road, as you know, there are graves;

I still mourn their inhabitants with my weeping.

They drank the passions' oldest wine,

and departed without a sound or echoes.

    شتّان بين ترابهم وسمائي

    And something of them remains upon life's back;

how far apart are their dust and my sky!

Do you remember how, when you had heard my melodies—

and I, and you, and my yearning and my longing—

the dreams of youth revisited you, so you said to me:

"I love you despite my misery and my sorrows"?

"I love you"—if only you had kept it from my hearing,

so that I might be its martyr, and you too.

It would have been a lover's solace and his bliss,

had the fates been at my right hand's command.
