The drinking companions—how dear the drinking companions are!

They denied me wine upon the carpet.

They denied me, though their wine is from my own juice,

    and departed without saying farewell.

O you who are leaving me, slow down:

    for some estrangement is forbidden.

O you who are leaving me, though you are

the cup's choicest essence, in delight and harmony.

O you who are leaving, the tavern has closed

    its doors and become darkness.

    قى وأغفت عيني ضنى وسقاما

    And the cup shunned my palm, and the cupbearer withdrew;

and my eye dozed in weariness and sickness.

    إنما نمت حيرة وانحطاما

    O you who are leaving, I did not sleep oblivious to you;

I slept only in bewilderment and brokenness.

Once I was, and you were; then you chose

what showed me the end before the end.

You sold me for a separation in which I am

the loneliest of lovers of wine and goblet.

Nothing remains to me of your love but dreams

    whose echo scatters dreams.

Memories for which I weep and sing,

and after you, they are love and drinking companions to me.

O you who are leaving me and my cup,

and my plight—do not burden me with blame.

If I sing or weep, then I am

my heart's slave, in tears and smiles.

Whether I sing or she weeps, it is all the same:

the most ardent of people is one who forgot, then loved madly.

O you who are leaving, do not remember me

as a singer filling the worlds with melodies.

O you who are leaving, remember nothing of me

    but pains and sicknesses.

Remember me as a brother to the bewildered nights,

in love with you, and the son of orphaned tears.

I shall live for you, even if I am

far from you, seeing no place for me among you.

I shall live for you; and if I die one day,

then remember me, for I have kept faith.

O you who are leaving, if I die one day,

I will already have been dead for days before then.

So farewell, with love and longing—

    farewell, and yearning, and peace.

O you who are leaving, however much you shun me,

I am still the one you knew, full of passion.
