The complainer bowed his head, and the sufferer slept.

And night grew intoxicated on cups of stillness.

Except one complainer whom the ribs had shrouded,

And whom the eyes mourned with their elegies.

    God had forbidden him joy,

And calamities tyrannized over his strength.

So he shunned the days, at dawn and forenoon,

And wished that sunset would enfold him.

He shook me when the voice of pain shook him,

So I listened closely to its echoes.

And behold, a melody veiled in regret,

Pleading with God in His exalted heights.

    أترى يمتدُّ بي أم يقصرُ

    I said: This rebirth's bounty is unknown;

Will it last long for me, I wonder, or be brief?

O hand of fate, would that you had never been a hand!

In me, the libertine resembled the ascetic.

    هدنا من راحتيه معول

    I have had enough of love, and so has my heart;

A pickaxe from its two palms has shattered us,

    Eternally accursed, with rabid strength,

It knows no mercy, among all it does not know.

Tell me: is there anything new in your world,

O hand of fate, or has the pen dried up?

And what you have hidden—is it promise or threat,

And sunrise, or sunset and darkness?

Tell me of my existence in life:

What drew you to me, that I should come into being?

O wrongdoer whose hands were freed,

And who cast every innocent into his fetters.

Here is the heart I purified

Of worldly desire and the sins of youth.

It rebelled in my breast when I called to it:

Rest, O heart, from this torment.

It thought I had spilled its blood amid affliction,

So it accused me of the ingratitude of ingrates.

Mercy for the heart! Who taught it

That I had denied its buried past?

The past of love, which inspired me

With singing verse and joyful hopes,

Still fills the face of time

With sweet laughter, gladness, and radiance.

I said: O heart, have mercy; for

This world is only an old sorceress.

    O child whom dolls distract,

Indeed, in the first life lie the meanings of the hereafter.

The heart said to me, grieved

That I had been distracted from its burning anguish:

O you with an ailing life, hasten its burial,

Before the lights of life blind you.

How often you sang the melodies of youth,

And let time toy with your youth!

Then youth came to you gray-haired,

And I am your heart, no heart of anyone else.

Within my folds are hopes; drawing near is

Their encounter with death—and death is hasty.

    وكلانا عن قريب مرتحل

    Destroy them yourself, for they may fear extinction;

And both of us will soon depart.

I said: O heart, how wretched I am!

I perish, while hopes do not end.

What beauty have you left me

After what I reject has pleased you?

Give me my hopes; I have readied them

For decay, before they could moisten your mouth.

And tomorrow you will cry: I have not been made to forget them!

Ah, how cruel you are—rather, how merciful!
