O you whose sanctuary is inviolate, there is no watering place but your spring.

And in me is the thirsty one's yearning for eternity's Kawthar.

I have loved you; know, then, that love for you impels me

Toward glory—and great love is glory's brother.

Your sons, who called to you while the sea roared,

And their skiff bewildered, its destination veiled,

Are victims of barren slopes; however high they climb,

Their ascent reaches no farther than barren dunes.

I seek protection for you from what Time fills their lives

With—every kind of misery and scheming.

They shine, while the days drink up their light,

To leave them to despair, wretchedness, and sleeplessness.

And they coax growth from rock, while the people around them

Are in a spreading shade of bounty like your own.

O father of poetry, what good are my reed pen and its magic

If I do not gain my due, and my good fortune does not shine?

And what good is a bold warrior whose fortune scowls,

While the sharp Indian sword laughs in his hands?

O father of poetry, when the waves raged unrestrained,

And I had cast the last of what I had to the whales,

I came, with hopes in my heart, all of them

Seeking guidance by the light of your blessed face.

We have seen you as the strongest and most exalted of poets

In eloquence and in mastery over vile Time.

So fulfill the hopes of fine art and its practitioners,

For others bestow no favors; it is your like who bestows them.

May He whose throne is above the heavens watch over you,

And grant you praise worthy of the heights of glory.
