The arrows of light sped forth to sever

The arrows of light pierced

the cord of my heart's hope.

Severing the cord of my heart's desire

وخبا الضياء السرمدي

وخبا الضياء السرمدي

ي ومات كوكب حُبيه

ي ومات كوكب حُبيه

And the everlasting radiance faded,

The eternal glow has faded

and the star of my love died.

And the star of my love died

وسطا السقام على البقي

وسطا السقام على البقي

يَة من ضياء شبابيه

يَة من ضياء شبابيه

And sickness assailed what remained

Sickness has overcome

of the radiance of my youth.

What remains of my youth's radiance

وأماتها فمضت ترت

وأماتها فمضت ترت

تِل في المقابر لحنيَه

تِل في المقابر لحنيَه

And killed it; it went on chanting

And killed it, so it passed

my melody among the graves.

Trembling into the grave of its melody

كم عانقت روحي سنا

كم عانقت روحي سنا

ه فخفّفت ممّا بيَه

ه فخفّفت ممّا بيَه

How often my soul embraced his radiance,

How my soul embraced

and eased some of what ailed me.

Its years and eased what ailed it

وشربت من نور الجما

وشربت من نور الجما

لِ فأسكرتني كأسيه

لِ فأسكرتني كأسيه

And I drank from the light of beauty,

And drank of the wine of beauty

and my cup made me drunk.

Intoxicating me with its cup

وثملت من فرط الهوى

وثملت من فرط الهوى

فَحطمتُ سورة خمريه

فَحطمتُ سورة خمريه

And I grew drunk from love's excess,

And in the excess of passion

so I broke the force of my wine.

I broke the veil of my reserve

قد كنت شاهد حبنا

قد كنت شاهد حبنا

يا ليل فارث لحاليه

يا ليل فارث لحاليه

You were indeed the witness to our love;

I was a witness to our love

O night, have pity on my plight.

O night, pity my state

واذهب إليه وصف أسا

واذهب إليه وصف أسا

ي وما أحلّ بجسميه

ي وما أحلّ بجسميه

And go to him and describe my sorrow,

And go to my beloved and describe

and what it has brought upon my body.

My misery and all that ails my body

يا زهرتي كذب الوشا

يا زهرتي كذب الوشا

ة بما يدنس طهريه

ة بما يدنس طهريه

O my flower, the slanderers have lied

My blossom, the gossip maligns

with what defiles my purity.

And taints your purity

هلا أتيت لهيكلي

هلا أتيت لهيكلي

وسمعت نجوى روحيه

وسمعت نجوى روحيه

Why did you not come to my temple

If only you had come to my temple

and hear the secret whispers of my soul,

And heard the whispers of my soul

ونظرت للدمع الهتو

ونظرت للدمع الهتو

ن فصنت عنه عينيه

ن فصنت عنه عينيه

and look upon the streaming tears,

And seen the tears of yearning

then shield my eye from them,

To spare you from their distress

ورضيتني عبدا لحس

ورضيتني عبدا لحس

نك واحتقنت دمائيه

نك واحتقنت دمائيه

and accept me as a slave to your beauty,

And been content with me as servant

and spare my blood,

To your beauty, staunching my wounds

فرايت مبلغ عفتي

فرايت مبلغ عفتي

وعلمت أنك جانيه

وعلمت أنك جانيه

then see the extent of my chastity

Then you would have known my chastity

and learn that you are the one who wrongs me?

And learned that you wronged me

أنت الحياة فما أرى

أنت الحياة فما أرى

في غير قربك سعديه

في غير قربك سعديه

You are life; I do not see

You are my life, so I see

my happiness in anything but your nearness.

No joy but through your nearness

والبعد عنك وعن سنا

والبعد عنك وعن سنا

ك منيّتي وفنائيه

ك منيّتي وفنائيه

And distance from you and from your radiance

And distance from you and your charm

is my death and my annihilation.

Is my death and dissolution

فتناولي نايَ الغرا

فتناولي نايَ الغرا

م وغنّني في عشقيه

م وغنّني في عشقيه

So take up the reed flute of love,

Take up the flute of love for me

and sing to me of my passion.

And sing to me of my passion

وترنّمي بالحب وار

وترنّمي بالحب وار

وي للوَرى من شعريه

وي للوَرى من شعريه

And sing melodiously of love, and recite

Chant to the world in song and verse

to humankind from my poetry.

Of the poetry of my desire

على أموت فمن يخل

على أموت فمن يخل

لِد في الصبابة ذكريه

لِد في الصبابة ذكريه

Perhaps I shall die—who, then, will immortalize

Let me die, for who will preserve

my memory in ardent love?

My memory in youth but you?

طال الأنين وما سمع

طال الأنين وما سمع

ت فهل أكفكف دمعيه

ت فهل أكفكف دمعيه

The moaning has lasted long, yet you have not heard;

Long has been my sighing, but you have not heard

shall I then wipe away my tears

Shall I stanch my tears?

وأعود من دنيا الغرا

وأعود من دنيا الغرا

مِ وقد كسبت شجونيه

مِ وقد كسبت شجونيه

and return from the world of love,

And return from the world of love

with my sorrows as my gain?

Having reaped its sorrows?

فدعى الدلال فما عشق

فدعى الدلال فما عشق

ت سواك طول حياتيه

ت سواك طول حياتيه

So leave off coyness; I have loved

For I called the heart's guide but loved

none but you throughout my life.

None but you all my years

ومرى خيالك أن يطو

ومرى خيالك أن يطو

ف بفكرتي وخياليه

ف بفكرتي وخياليه

And bid your image to roam

And your phantom still comes to haunt

through my thought and my imagination.

My thoughts and fantasies

أبدا يعذبني الهوى

أبدا يعذبني الهوى

أفلا رحمت فؤاديه

أفلا رحمت فؤاديه

Love torments me unceasingly;

Passion tortures me forever

will you not then have mercy on my heart?
