1. يا أخي في الله إن العهد

    في الله وثيق

    O my brother in God, truly the covenant

    in God is firm.

  2. وطريق الحق ضحيا

    ن فهيّا والطريق

    And the path of truth is sunlit;

    so come—take the path!

  3. يا أخي في الله هذا

    الفجر ممدود الظلال

    O my brother in God, this

    dawn, its shadows outstretched,

  4. كان لي بالأمس محراب

    صلاة وابتهال

    was yesterday my sanctuary

    of prayer and supplication.

  5. ذهب الأمس فلا تهف

    إليه وتعال

    Yesterday is gone; do not yearn

    for it, but come.

  6. نزرع الأفق مني

    حمراء يخشاها الزوال

    Let us sow the horizon with hopes

    red, which extinction fears.

  7. ونوشي بالقنا المخضوب

    أعناق الجبال

    And embroider with bloodstained spears

    the necks of the mountains.

  8. إنها ساعة إيمان

    وعزم ونضال

    It is an hour of faith

    and resolve and struggle,

  9. نبتت في الزمن الغربيب

    بيضاء المجال

    sprung up in a pitch-black age,

    white in its expanse.

  10. فاغتنمها يقظ الوجدان

    مشبوب الخيال

    So seize it, your heart awake,

    your imagination aflame.

  11. وأدر عينيك في البيداء

    واستفت الرمال

    And turn your eyes across the desert,

    and ask the sands for counsel.

  12. فلها في عالم الصمت

    نداءات طوال

    For in the world of silence they have

    long calls.

  13. يا أخي في الله إن العهد

    في الله وثيق

    O my brother in God, truly the covenant

    in God is firm.

  14. وطريق الحق ضحيا

    فهيا والطريق

    And the path of truth is sunlit;

    so come—take the path!

  15. يا أخي في الله هذي

    القمم الشمّ شهود

    O my brother in God, these

    lofty summits bear witness.

  16. لك فيها حسب ضخم

    الأحاديث مجيد

    In them is your ancestral honor, grand

    in its tales and glorious.

  17. تربها الصديان آباءٌ

    كرام وجدود

    Their thirsty dust is fathers—

    noble ones—and forefathers,

  18. توجوا المجد بتاج الخلد

    والمجد وليد

    who crowned glory with immortality's crown

    while glory was a newborn.

  19. الزمان الكهل غاب

    وهمو فيه الأسود

    Aged time was a forest,

    and they were its lions.

  20. عرب كالشهب وضاءون

    مضاءون صيد

    Arabs, radiant as shooting stars,

    resolute, proud.

  21. لم يكن فيهم لغير

    الحق والخير وجود

    Among them, nothing other than

    truth and goodness existed.

  22. وفراعين على أمجادهم

    صلّى الخلود

    And pharaohs, upon whose glories

    immortality prayed.

  23. ذكرهم في خاطر

    الدهر قديم وجديد

    Their memory, in the mind

    of time, is old and new.

  24. كلهم قلبٌ يناجي

    ولسان يستعيد

    Together, they are a heart that communes

    and a tongue that recalls.

  25. يا أخي في الله إن العهد

    في الله وثيق

    O my brother in God, truly the covenant

    in God is firm.

  26. وطريق الحق ضحيا

    فهيّا والطريق

    And the path of truth is sunlit;

    so come—take the path!

  27. يا أخي في الله

    هذي القمم الشم عدول

    O my brother in God,

    these lofty summits are upright witnesses.

  28. هذه الرملة تحكي أختها فيما تقول

    إنها تنشر للذّروة

    This grain of sand echoes its sister in what it says.

    It unfolds for the summit

  29. ما تطوى السهول

    ويحها ظمياء تخشى

    what the plains fold away.

    Alas for it—thirsty, it fears

  30. الريّ من دمّ الضلول

    شربته أزرق المعدن

    being quenched with the errant one's blood.

    It drank it—blue in substance,

  31. مسموم الأصول

    ثم دار الزمن المارد

    poisoned at its roots.

    Then time, the giant, turned,

  32. عجلان الفصول

    وجرى صهيون خلف

    swift in its seasons.

    And Zion ran after

  33. الوهم والوهم قتول

    فبنى قبر أمانيه

    illusion—and illusion is deadly.

    So it built the grave of its hopes,

  34. وأغراه الفضول

    وأراد الله أن ينتحر

    and curiosity enticed it.

    And God willed the suicide

  35. الحظ الكسول

    فإذا ما شاء صهيون

    of indolent fortune.

    And behold, what Zion wished for

  36. غثاء في سيول

    وأتينا ولنا بالنصر

    was flotsam in torrents.

    And we came; in victory we had

  37. إيمانٌ طليق

    نبعث الماضي الذي

    an unfettered faith,

    resurrecting the past that

  38. كفّنه الدهر السحيق

    يا أخي في الله

    remote time had shrouded.

    O my brother in God,

  39. إن الحرب عمياء الدخان

    كان في عيني نهار

    war, indeed, is blind with smoke.

    There was daylight in my eyes;

  40. لا تسلني كيف كان

    طرق الليل على الهيجاء

    do not ask me how it was.

    Night knocked amid the fray

  41. أبواب الزمان

    فاجعل الليلة دهرا

    at the doors of time.

    So make tonight an age

  42. من جلاد وطعان

    واسق صهيون لظاها

    of sword-fighting and spear-thrusts.

    And give Zion its blaze to drink,

  43. حممى الغليان

    وإذ ناداك من أحلاف

    lava-hot in its boiling.

    And when you are called from among the allies

  44. صهيون لسان

    يتمنى هدنة الحرب

    of Zion by a tongue

    that longs for a truce in war

  45. وإغماد السنان

    فاذكر القتلى

    and the sheathing of the spearhead,

    then remember the slain

  46. وما ذاقواه من كفّ الجبان

    وارتقب يومي

    and what they tasted at the coward's hand.

    And await my day,

  47. فيومي مثلما أعلم دان

    يا أخي في الله

    for my day, as I know, is near.

    O my brother in God,

  48. إن العهد في الله وثيق

    وطريق الحق ضحيا

    the covenant in God is indeed firm.

    And the path of truth is sunlit;

  49. ن فهيّا والطريق

    so come—take the path!
