O lamenting one, whom sleep has forsaken,

And tears are the heart's molten essence in his eyelid,

This is the night, so greet sleeplessness,

And drink with memory at its wine-cask.

This is the night: stillness has enfolded it

In a thick cloak, like a talisman,

Burned only by the fire of sorrows

And the sigh of the anguished and the love-stricken.

You pillowed your hopes in the earth's belly,

But did not pillow your burdened head.

And your world grew dark from what befell,

And what had turned away was about to draw near.

You became like a star enfolded by its setting,

And remnants of its radiance still remain,

Wandering across the horizon, overtaken by bewilderment,

And their lifespan is a pledge in the palm of loss.

Love and dreams in your eyes

Are a mirage's gleam spread across a trackless desert.

And poetry and melodies in your ears

Are an unending world of deprivation.

Your nights were lost, despite their lack

Of the heart's repose and the tongue's silence.

Then your whispered confidences followed in their wake,

An ardent longing that sets time's cup ablaze.

This time, a child in its play,

Is deeper in thought than the philosopher's mind.

You were denied what you crave of its serenity,

And lived in it like a wandering phantom.

You walk, overpowered, toward a destination

Whose beginning and end are unknown.

And how many a sign has time shown you

That made the shunned resemble the desired.

A curtain is drawn over the universe

Of the darkness of the unseen, which never reveals itself.

Night and day wrestle over it,

And time hastens the steps of those who depart.

Oh, the gardens with their spreading shade,

Embracing the patterned robes of fresh flowers!

The lily does not know the meaning of weariness,

Nor does the nestling know the meaning of torment.

Winter came upon them after summer,

And from the spring of life came autumn.

    المارد العاتي لديها ضعيف

    They could not ward off the ravages of extinction;

The defiant giant is weak before them.

Oh, the wastelands with their turbulent uplands,

Barren, with their plains lying still!

Night within them is an altar to death,

And morning there a stage for bewilderment.

Their boundaries are what the beholder weaves

From a summit, a thicket, or an open expanse.

Within them, thought outstrips the foot,

And the living and the dead are alike to them.

How is it they do not complain of drought,

And the wild ostrich is not abased within them?

A voice is a voice, from one grieving or rejoicing,

And wind is wind, whether an east breeze or a scorching blast.

O lamenting one, while the heart of night

Is tender toward the sleepless man and woman,

The wind of sorrow carried off your melodies,

Yet visions of the ungrateful woman did not leave you.

And you, with the universe and all it holds,

Feel hemmed in by the universe and its beings,

And think the wasteland you inhabit

A crime of birth and of your parents.

Have mercy! What you claim is nothing

But the deception of hungry yearning.

So go to your Creator, the Originator,

And sing Him the lost song,

The song of doubt that never ceases

To rouse the sleeping rebellion within you

And illusions swim in their universe,

Your mute solitude is the symbol of God,

And your wandering life is the book of time,

And your voice, over which its own echo weeps,

Is a lyre enthralled by sorrow.

What of the gardens with their spreading shade,

And what of this wasteland in your world?

You are the one in whom imagination lives,

Laughing like a madman at your funeral.

If you weigh down the palms of those proclaiming your death.

    This overpowering, everlasting decree

Your life—how sweet and how radiant it is,

If you do not grieve over what has passed.

It has passed—how fitting that you bury

Its memory in its silent bed.
