فغنّىso sang لحونَthe melodies of الدمعtears فيin كهفهits cave قلبيmy heart
I remembered you, and remembrance deepens my anguish.
I remembered you, and remembrance doubles my sorrows,
So my heart sang the melodies of tears within its cave.
So the tunes of tears sing in the cave of my heart,
يخالجهstir within it طيفانtwo phantoms طيفa phantom يذيبهmelts it
حنيناwith longing وطيفand a phantom محرقٌburning كلظىlike the blaze of الجدبdrought
Two phantoms stir within it: one melts it
Assailed by two ghosts - one ghost melts it with yearning,
with longing, and another burns like the blaze of drought.
And a ghost burning hot as the aridity of drought.
هوit is البينseparation لمdid not يخلقهcreate it منthe one who قدرordained الهوىlove

لغيرfor other than عذابthe torment of العاشقthe lover المدنفwasting with illness الصبlove-stricken
It is separation; the one who ordained love did not create it
Separation was not created by the destiny of love
for anything but the torment of the wasting, love-stricken lover.
Except for the agony of the melancholic lover.

لناof ours والدجىand darkness كالهجرlike estrangement والنسمand the breezes كالعتبlike reproach
When night calls me, I recall moments
When the night calls me, I recall our intimate moments,
we shared, with darkness like estrangement and breezes like reproach.
Me and the darkness like estrangement, and the breeze like reproach.

You embrace me like a child whose shyness clothes
Embracing me like a child diffusing his shyness
him in sackcloth robes of safety and sweet hope.
Upon him the touches of safety and sweet hope.

So I perish as a buyer's amulet perishes,
So I melt away like a charm worn by one who journeys,
which he offers to draw near to the Pole Star.
Brought close to the star of Polaris by my tresses.

Deprivation of you returns to me, and I seek refuge
Deprivation from you returns to me, so I take refuge
in your breast, O my world, from your painful abandonment.
In your bosom, O my world, from your difficult estrangement.

And my tears are prisoners in my eyelids, bound
And my tear imprisoned in my eyelids, shackled
by a tyrant's pride that checks my flood of tears.
By the might of a tyrant who holds back my weeping.

وأشفقand I am afraid منof بعدa parting سيفقدنيwill rob me of لُبىmy reason
I display my happiness at our meeting, and my joy,
I appear happy with our meeting and my joy,
and fear a parting that will rob me of my reason.
And I fear that after this loss will make me lose my mind.

I swim in my thoughts, while my tears swim too,
I swim in my thoughts and my tears are swimming,
then a hand awakens me, like the clouds' morning rain.
So you wake me like clouds passing in the morning.

We depart as we came, trailing our chastity,
And we leave as we came, dragging our chastity,
teaching flowers and grass the purity of love.
Teaching purity of love to the flowers and grass.

ودمعيand my tears فيon رسيغكyour wrist أسنىmore radiant منthan القلبthe bracelet
I remembered you when the caravan's people called out to it,
I remembered you when the caravan called its people,
and my tears upon your wrist shone brighter than the bracelet.
And my tears in your saddlebag sweeter than my heart.

فأودعهand I entrust to it سرthe secret of الصبابةyearning والحبand love
I kiss a sleeping dawn, its secret veiled,
Dawn comes, confused, sleeping, its secret slumbering,
and entrust to it the secret of yearning and love.
So I entrust to it the secret of my youth and love.

I fill the cup of longing to the brim, and longing prevails
And I sip the cup of passion whose passion overcomes me,
over me; I weep for fear of my companions' reproach.
Making me weep, fearing blame from my companions.

The hastening caravan called me, but I offered no more
The caravan called me to glory but I could only
than a sigh that rent the ribs within my side.
Moan a moan that cracked my ribs in my side.

فترثىso laments لهاfor them عينيmy eye بلؤلئهاwith its pearls الرطبwet
The hand of separation tears apart my beating heart's hopes,
The hand of separation shredded my fluttering hopes,
and my eye laments them with its wet pearls.
So my eyes weep for them with their moist pearls.

I remembered you, and a sigh flowed forth with the night,
I remembered you and a sigh flowed with the night,
made tender by whispered prayer, that my Lord might have mercy on me.
Its murmurs soften it so my Lord may have mercy on me.
وضاقتand narrowed رحابthe expanses of الصبرpatience بيaround me فتركتهاso I left them
لتقذفنيso they may fling me الأوهامillusions فيinto صدرهاtheir breast الرحبspacious
The expanses of patience closed in on me, so I left them,
The expanse of patience narrowed around me so I left it
for illusions to fling me into their spacious breast.
To hurl me into its vast bosom.

And in my breast a devout monk went mad,
In my chest dwells an ascetic monk
clamoring in complaint against distance and nearness.
Who clamors with his complaints of distance and nearness.
ففيfor in البعدdistance نارa fire يصهرmelts الروحthe soul جمرهاits embers
وفيand in القربnearness رمضاءthe scorching ground of الوشاياتslander والكذبand lies
For in distance is a fire whose embers melt the soul,
For in distance is a fire whose embers melt the soul,
and in nearness, the scorching ground of slander and lies.
And in nearness the lies and slander wound.
يعالجهtreats him العرافthe diviner بالطبwith medicine والرُقىand incantations
وماand what لجراحاتfor the wounds of القلوبhearts وللطبّand for medicine
The diviner treats him with medicine and incantations,
The soothsayer treats him with medicine and charms
yet what have hearts' wounds to do with medicine?
But wounds of the heart are not treated with medicine.
ومنand whoever كانis روحيّspiritual الهوىin passion عبقريّهُhis genius
فكيفthen how يذودwards off الضرّharm عنهfrom him أخوa brother of التُربdust
And he whose genius is spiritual in its passion—
And how can one who made the scent of love his genius
how can a brother of dust ward harm away from him?
Be shielded from harm by the brother of dust?
فياربso, O Lord إماeither أنthat تريحyou relieve منfrom الهوىlove
فؤاديmy heart فحسبيso enough for me منهof it ماwhat ذقتهI tasted it حسبيenough for me
So, Lord, either grant relief from love
So oh Lord either relieve my heart of passion
to my heart—for what I have tasted of it is enough, enough—
For what I have tasted of it is enough for me.

or a meeting whose serenity is not clouded
Or a meeting whose purity is not spoiled
by the calamities of time, which has never slept in its war against me.
By the misfortunes of a time that never rested from warring against me.

زخارفَthe adornments of دنياهhis world وأوفىand rose high علىabove الشهبthe shooting stars
For I am only a poet whose heart has spurned
For I am but a poet whose heart is empty
the adornments of his world and soared above the shooting stars.
Of the ornaments of his world, and truest to passions.

فؤادthe heart of الحديدiron الغفلunwrought والحجرand stone الصلبhard
And my love is a tragedy whose weeping shakes
And my love is a tragedy whose tears shake
the heart of unwrought iron and hard stone.
The heedless heart of iron and unfeeling stone.
نشدتI sought صفاءthe serenity of النفسthe soul فيin الكاسthe cup والهوىand love
فحطنيso brought me low كأسيmy cup وشردنيand made me a wanderer حبيmy love
I sought the soul's serenity in the cup and in love,
I sought purity of soul in the wine and passion
but my cup brought me low, and my love made me a wanderer.
But my cup debased me and my love made me stray.
