Fill the cup to the brim as you wish, and chant your songs.

Perhaps they will make you forget what you endured in your evenings.

Wanton love is your world and your life's dreams.

And chaste love is my world—so wander in your reveries.

And recount to people tales of wine drawn from your musings.

O my drinking companion, fill the cup to the brim, and do not fear reproach.

Indeed, it was forbidden to anyone wasted by longing.

My cup is the eyelid that sang to you with tears and arrows.

And the wine is my tears, which have pitched tents in my eyelid.

Whenever I long for bitter sap, my tears stream in torrents.

The heart throbs when the wounds cry out with its anguish.

Then tears visit it each morning, and wailing whispers to it.

And I, the wanderer, am enfolded by the plains in sleeplessness.

I seek solace, yet in my heart lie wounds from solace.

Sorrow and sleeplessness are my provisions, and my tears are wine for me.

O my drinking companion, you are a stranger to love, O my drinking companion.

How far is a heart overflowing with longing from an untroubled heart?

How far is love of clay from a love that soared above the stars?

The secret of your anguish is a raging passion, thick with clouds.

And my youth is the secret of my anguish, my sorrow, and my cares.

O my drinking companion, life is nothing but passion and enchantment,

And a hidden, telltale madness in pure love,

And lips, and sweet saliva, and words, and eyes,

And reproach, forever silent, fluttering and tender.

God honored its echo, and the years received it.

How far from your world are my world, my dreams, and my art?

You seek bodily pleasure, so put your unjust accusations aside.

And I am the victor and the vanquished in the world of wishes.

Tomorrow you will mourn your days there, while I will sing,

On the day I find the secret of my deprivation, my sorrows, and my grief.

The sea breezes taught us the serenity of dreaming.

And the waves' moan on the shore has a gentle melody.

And the brown sands are bewildered poetry on the peaks.

Wild breezes have unraveled its mute meters.

They taught us the stillness of the soul and the war of the pen.

Memories of yesterday drift gently across my life's horizon,

As stars with stifled glimmers, like the dawn of death's heralds.

No melodies of prayer from the present have lulled them.

And the hoped-for tomorrow is hostage in the hand of the propitious unseen.

Alas for him over whom memory's sand-scattering winds have blown!

O my drinking companion, patience under blame is enough for you and for me.

I am a slave among beauty's slaves; I do not own my heart.

The destiny of destinies is an extraordinary love like mine.

Alas for my soul: thirsty, it has seen nothing but barrenness.

I ask my Lord for nothing but what my Lord knows.
