Eve, O secret of the beauty of existence,

O all that we love in the world,

It is sweet to me to prostrate myself before you,

For I inherited love from Adam.

Be gentle with what is in your longed-for hand,

For he is the youth of dreams, O ungrateful woman.

You made him the plaything of this life,

And what an everlasting plaything he is!

Like an enraptured worshipper, he bows his brow,

And his soul sends its entreaty to you.

What, then, has enticed you as you laugh—

Love's abasement, or is that the nature of women?

For God's sake, O Eve, do not deprive him

Of an embrace, or a kiss, or tenderness.

For he is a continuation of his father's hopes,

Since the day he left the bliss of Paradise.
