Forgive me if I sing and cast

my rebellion and my doubts to the wind.

For the lonely nightingale may sing

with storms of sorrow on either side.

My hope is an oasis, my life a desert,

and my cup overflows with melodies.

And the tears that washed my wounds

with their dew are now without a wellspring.

And the road that embraced me yesterday

is far from my sight, though it lies close by.

And the companions with whom I shared my cup—

the mist of years has hidden them from me.

I am now alone—ah, the pain of 'I am now alone!'

Then alas for its mournful echo!

And the brilliant tomorrow, if it is my lot,

its lights are for eyes other than mine.

So when I set my soul free and sing,

then listen to me—or forgive me.
