    Behold, my drunkenness is that of a slave who has a cup;

Another has a different cup, and he has a soul

Other than his own. Alas, and then alas

For my soul because of my cup—alas, what a cup!

I drank, and the nectar blinded me; leave me, then.

Ah, cupbearer, for tomorrow I shall sip

And drink, my cupbearer, while you, of my intoxication,

Are well aware when the cup overflows with its waves.

Tomorrow wine is mine, cupbearer; go on, for I

Am perishing in an ecstasy whose like the soul has never tasted.

I see you as though, with you, I advance and retreat,

And you, like me, are sailing with me, never anchoring.

Gently—or tell me, if you leave me

A little while to sober up, what was inscribed upon the page?

Is there an escape, cupbearer, from what God decreed?

Gently, my cupbearer: tomorrow I shall have no head left.

I wonder: did fate so will it—and you are fate—

For the feelings in your heart keep growing cruel.

And still you bring the drink to me and fill the

Cups, tempting me, though there is no feeling in my mouth.

Gently, my cupbearer; let what you see suffice:

There is no spirit in my blood, no solace in my hand.

Yes, leave me. O God, Your mercy! Spare me

The presence of human cupbearers for as long as humankind exists.

Yes, leave me, cupbearer; between me and the life

You live lie boundaries that intuition cannot lightly cross.

The existence I inhabit is other than what you see.

Yes, you whom I mean: my world is holiness.

Though I am clay through and through, in being and need,

Yet that sun was created for clay.

Blessed are You, Lord of the heavens: here I am,

And here You are throughout existence; glory is Yours.

What happened has happened; tomorrow, erase what has passed,

My God—or let it stand, for I am Your servant.

You have brought doomsdays upon me, and I have been borne

By Your decree beyond what ill and good fortune devised.

I pass through myself in my evening and my morning,

And my portion of myself is nearness and distance.

I pass through it this day, whose captive I am,

As You have willed; I can neither repel nor turn back.

As I passed yesterday—and yesterday is my present,

And the hope of what the solitary unknown will bring.

Yes, my past swept by me, Lord, advancing

Upon me and blinding me, though my sight burned bright.

A darkness the nights sheltered, making enigmas of

Its veils: it is bewilderment, anguish, and sleeplessness.

    They sheltered it until it grew gray, though it is their twin;

They have dreams within it, and purpose in embracing it.

My nights, which pass away across time

As dust, while my dawn forever retreats before them.

I have renounced them, Lord; grant me grace, for perhaps

I wept one day in sorrow, and longing consumed me.

You are there for those who weep, and I am truly repentant,

Even if my sin is that I stand against humankind.

For they worshipped false gods and relished filth,

And doted on their world; they rejected, but never turned back.

Nor did they glorify Truth or sanctify the heights,

Or beg a draught from Him who holds the watering place.

And I am indeed among them, my God and Master,

And what lies between us is an outstretched shadow of distance.

I played my reed-flute for them and sang my melodies,

And fed them my provisions and opened wide my home.

And I said to them: This is my home, and you

Are my heart's beloved, as long as my Maker wills.

It is yours, so long as you give me your affection to drink,

Pure, quenching my thirst and inspiring my organ.

I am your singer and the servant of your visiting guests,

And your slave, a slave to guests and hangers-on.

For you I reveal myself, elated, flooded with contentment,

As long as I see among you a drinking companion who loves me.

What, then, did my hands reap from them, except what

Makes my heart fly into fragments and perish?

And what, soon after the kindness I showed them,

Except what my soul sees and my eyes recount?

Epics from the poetry of time, all of them

Tears and moans that vanish only to return.

I dyed my horizon with them and moistened my oasis,

Though they held no benefit for any gleaner.

And what returned to my heart after I passed

Childhood's years? Ah, how delightful those years were!

Ah, heart, nothing remains in you but wishes:

Wishes of yesterday, the unknown, and the lowly present.

    وأنت بمعنى الغيب ذاكي التفطن

    Yesterday's wishes, O my heart, with the unseen before them;

And you are keen at discerning the meaning of the unseen.

You know better what the unseen means, for often

You fled my conjectures to ascertain it.

Yet you returned with nothing but what befits you:

    Care, and wayward, tamed delusion.

Have mercy, my heart; wishes—you know

How they deceive the ignorant man deemed discerning.

Have mercy, my heart, and take me where we see

Nothing but despair in its valley, weary and sallow.

We see despair in its valley, with death beside it,

And news of what unfolds and traces of what has passed.

We see it as in the days when we met it:

Generous, openhanded, turning no one away.

They knew it before us as the finest rest,

Toward which shine those breathless from night travel.

They knew it otherwise too, and as a judge

    Of wondrous judgments, just and never rash;

A king who, in all that is clear or obscure

In time, holds power that humbles tyranny.

They knew it as a poet whose entire share

Of poetry is to weep for months over a day.

    على ظلمه يبتاع منه ويشترى

    They also knew it, short of that, as a trader;

Despite its injustice, people buy and purchase from it.

And we have known it in every state,

And lived beneath its gaze, O heart, for ages.

We knew it as loved ones know one another,

A companion in both its states, hidden and manifest.

It was nothing but ease in every hardship,

And nothing but a cleansing of calamities.

So now neither of us, O heart, has any other

Hope, though it annihilates, exhausts, and bewilders.

Yes, O child of my ever-sorrowful days,

O sovereign of sorrows in all I see:

It is despair, our old love and our fortress.

Take it, then, and make your first love your last.
