Night grew drunk on goblets of stillness,

And the universe yearned for the wine of melody.

So swirl the tender wine in your palm,

And ask rapture for forgetfulness of pain.

    Tell her, O cup,

What time has brought upon us.

    على الحبّ التقينا

    We are two phantoms in its valley;

    In love we met.

    So we laughed and wept,

And we thirsted and drank our fill,

And we gave love our world

And all that lay in our hands,

    When smiles sang

At our meeting, within our eyes,

A song that joined, in the serenity

    Of hopes, our two souls.

And we went on, while passion knew

    Where we were going,

    Scattering dreams as wine,

    Its vineyard within our lips.

Do you think it was a dream

That made the world dear to us?

    Then it departed and ended—

The dream of our passion—and so we ended.

And life passed as was willed

    By my abasement in love,

    Between yearning and longing,

    And sleeplessness and sleep.

    Ah, for my love,

O cup, and for the memory of my beloved!

Ah, for my heart, and how wretched it is

    In the world of hearts!

Ah, for what sorrows stir up

    Within it—such flame!

    Give me your oblivion,

O cup, if it is my healer.

You are my portion in sorrow,

And he is my portion in sorrow.
