We call him mad and pelt his head with stones,

While in his head storms of reason have raged.

They wail, and a blaze of their wailing sears him,

So he wanders with bewildered steps, like the children of ants.

He imagines a mirage flowing from his sky,

Yet the earth's sky holds nothing but drought.

And he looks upon the people's land, though it is barren,

So he deems the people's land a deluge of rain.

So he raves in melodies whose unity is shattered,

And at life's end there is no reunion for them.

Oh, if only these people would go utterly mad,

And be too absorbed to heed the speckled serpent and poison,

And taste the fare of those who scoff at their lives,

Then turn their gaze from the tightly locked lights.

But they went mad over ornamented clay,

So they shielded it from life's seething fire.

Yet it was preserved only for decay to savor.

Alas for them! They were in fetters, kept from reason.
