By my love, by my longings, by my tears that streamed,

By my doubt, by my faith—and alas for them both!

By the memory of bliss whose pure sweetness I never tasted,

And the memory of a hell in which I lived in bliss,

By our nights, intoxicated with dreams of our love,

By the solitude of a heart that wrestled unwillingly with time,

By your words to me, while the universe was an unplayed flute,

And we within it a melody that crossed the night in reverie:

“I shall love you as a body whose purity lies in its sins,

And as an earthly spirit tormented by heaven.”

Leave me, while in my star there is a glimmer of light

That tears the pitch-dark gloom away from my soul,

And in you is youth, in whose gardens graze

Serpents that smell perfume as a poisoned breeze.

Leave me, for life may pass and an end come

To my youth, while I have reaped nothing yet but illusion.

Leave me, for I have exhausted my melodies on you,

And burned my blossoms and my shattered youth.

And in the cup remains a little of the wine of wishes,

My despair will spill it, and I shall live on thirst.

You want me to be a bird with a broken wing—

No, by Him who fashioned you as wound and balm!

I shall forget you as an illusion whose phantoms kept me awake,

    And as beauty, as hopes, and as forbidden love;

And go blind to the horizon whose sun you were,

And disown myself when blindness saddens me.

My blood—you spilled it upon the inner corners of the nights’ eyes,

And my poetry—calamities have turned it into mourning rites.

So now, with deprivation my wine and my tavern,

I live on it, be it paradise or hell.

When beauty calls to people, “Come to love!”

Then I shall live in bliss through my deprivation.
