Come to the procession of the bewildered,

O Eid, O awakener of the bewildered!

    بارك بها البيد والصحارى

    Come, with wishes in your palm;

Bless the wastelands and deserts with them.

    Come to longing and yearning,

Like one away who has sighted home.

    Come to livers ablaze,

And eyes whose tears have sought refuge.

And walk with the people wherever they walk,

And turn with time wherever it turns.

And question the night and the day,

And whoever has seen the night and the day:

When what befell the earth befell it,

Who kindled it into a fire in existence,

Setting it ablaze in fierce strife

    That spread misery and destruction,

And taught the owls how to weep

For its ill-omened ruins and its inhabited places?

    Scenes of death still unfold,

    And a world laments collapse.

    Come to the sorrowful world,

    Joyful or weeping in lamentation.

And tell those who quaffed death

To the plaintive strains of the rapturous cannon:

You squeezed the cup—so drink it,

While the cup blazes with raging flame.

Do not cool yourselves with the draught, lest

    You tread the farthest paths.

And wars, as you know, are chaos,

    Enticing with their strange ways.

You began them, so do not turn away,

While the wind is only beginning to blow.

And your land is your land—so dig

Within its belly the strange grave.

Let nothing water what it has grown

    But scalding, streaming blood,

From you and from those who wronged you:

Both are equal under the law of war.

So upon it there is no longer room

    For splendid, monotonous logic.

How many a gift has been followed by another!

We reaped no good from a dissembler,

    Only more victims,

    Making us poorer in men.

We advance until some people say:

"Victory belongs to the Arabs—there is no escape!"

And dry land becomes, from our blood

And from the enemy's blood, a sea.

Until, when the battle grew fierce

    And death thundered and scowled,

They sought refuge at our sides and said:

    "Peace better befits the sensible."

    As though reason meant that

The slain man should turn his back to the killers!

So tell them: may what they desired perish!

The pact of peace has become a memory.

You built the grave—so dwell in it.

What a disgraced grave among graves,

    It encloses you, complaining; and

Its pebbles wish they were other pebbles!

You have come as a feast—and a feast you would be,

If its rebellious devil were still.

I wished my call would rouse him,

And my new voice would shake him.

The ship, O Folke—we are aboard it,

And the waves of your tyranny are fierce.

You desired peace, so we responded,

And time bears witness to what lies between us.

And how many promises you gave us!

Yet your promises did not endure.

So you did not trust, nor did we,

So our war is both new and ancestral.

    So kindle the fire—kindle it!

For, before it, we are all fuel.

And we are sons of those who sang it

As epics whose soul is immortality.

And our glory is the glory you have known,

And God and all existence know it.

You have come as a feast—so a feast you would be, O

Eid, if the fetters were undone.
