On a shore above life lay outstretched

Dreams upon its sand, wakeful and drunken.

You sleep, O dreams of my soul, as though

God's unseen mysteries had given you wine from their cup.

You sleep until God decrees His will,

Then turns life's hardship in my world to ease,

And sprinkles my barren days with a downpour

Of goodness, whose steady coming makes me forget evil.

Then I shall live, and my truth shall live after my death,

And send thanks from my heart to my Creator.

O dreams of my soul, would that I were able

To revive what has passed and forget what it brought about.

O dreams of my soul, would that I were helpless,

Feeble of mind, heedless, unable to grasp thought.

I seem to see this universe as a tomb of truths

That melt and perish within our supreme truth.

I seem to see this mind as the shadow of a fable:

We rebel when it departs and complain when it stays.

And my poetry—its wellspring is from truth's deep well—

Would that I had lived never knowing poetry!

I seem to see it as morning light in the darkness of clay,

Over which clay heaped a grave from its own spirit.

And my life—from its darkness deep night is born,

And in its presence the dawn-worshipper forgets dawn—

I seem to see it as a drop in time's tavern,

Scalding, pouring into its heart as embers.

And my fortune, which I have washed with my tears,

Without expecting any reward for it from my time—

I seem to see it as a flower in death's grasp,

With barren leaves, giving off no fragrance.

And my despair of the world, my anger at fate,

And my mind's unwilling belief in falsehoods—

I suffered and made the nights suffer for a wish

I longed for in the morning and scorned at noon.

It was only that my will should be obeyed

By my time, and that I freely gain what I desire.

And I was made to forget that illusion is my nature's spirit,

And that He who set my life in motion knows it best,

And that inexorable fate, like me, is driven

Toward an end encompassing the universe and time.

And among delusion's miseries is that I philosophize about

Life as I please, without fully knowing it.

I have failed to understand it; in helplessness lies rest

For one who makes this world a road to the next.

But I, with reason both my light and darkness,

Try through dreams to lift the veil.

And still, though the lamp's light has failed,

I rock my hopes and nurse them on patience.

I have seen people's fortunes differ: an ignoramus

    Is a prince, while the learned are captives in his hand;

And a singular genius lives a wanderer,

Enduring, at the hands of his days, humiliation and poverty.

Then, if he dies, the sleepers rise and rain

Their tears in torrents on his barren, desolate soil.

And set about reviving his remains by commemorating him,

But remembrance can never avail the dead.

He had hoped for food, not for someone to believe in him,

Yet they thought he sought the impossible, or unbelief.

Which of the two would I choose, were I like him?

Perhaps I am more deserving of the dullard's happy lot.

Oh, many a night whose sorrows have encircled me,

And my lament and burning tears were its drinking companions.

And I called to my past, which had gone and folded away,

And it approached, grim-faced and dust-covered,

Shaking contentment's hems away from my remembrance

Of its days, with which I began my life.

So I spoke, confiding in it, with anguish in my soul

That inflamed my breathing and filled me with scorn:

To what valley, and in what unknown waste

Of revolving time, did you part from me by force?

And you—do you know what I do not know?

And is there guidance in you for my bewildered days?

    In you I was a child, all joy and delight;

But here I am, knowing neither serenity nor cheer.

The days pass me with paralyzed steps,

And fate devours me, ravenous and burning,

And I ask it what I have done against it—

For even the learned may question one ignorant of the matter.

Yet it is only my twin in its orbit:

Both of us endure bondage, coercion, and subjugation.

And the past of my life bowed its head in sorrow and bewilderment,

It added neither knowledge nor ignorance to me.

    وخلّفني المسكين أسيان مزورّا

    It was only illusion's return, a passing phantom;

And the poor thing left me sorrowful and withdrawn.

So I resumed my wandering as my Creator willed,

For how can the compelled defy compulsion?

O dreams of my soul, each day has a tomorrow,

And every tomorrow is yesterday once its time has passed.

And my today is a tomorrow weeping for a tormented yesterday,

Calling to a tomorrow in the unseen, not yet out of its chamber.

Calling to a tomorrow—O my soul's yearning for a tomorrow

In which you will be glory and hope in bloom!

O dreams of my soul, would that I had one mote of you,

By which to live like a captive when he escapes.
