One day I imagined myself a mighty god,

Master of might, whose decrees prevail.

And my glory and I rose above creation,

    Settling the disputes among them.

And we saw evil as the mother of calamities,

And the wellspring of hatred and pain.

So I and my own self agreed on goodness,

And on erasing evil and sins.

Then all that the universe and time held sprang forth,

Singing the melody of contentment and peace.

And suddenly, after ages, I felt

That my essence was connected to humankind.

I am pure goodness, and those who are my servants—

Evil has no place among them.

No differences remained between us except power,

The secret of creation and annihilation.

So I wondered: How do I differ from them,

With their best behind me and before me?

And it seemed evil found silence too confining,

So she rose from bygone days.

Then she said: O Lord, there is no good in goodness

Unless its powers shatter my arrows.

And my mingling with it, and my presence within it,

Are, as you know, the foundation of every order.

And I seemed to hear in her choked voice

Echoes of my wisdom and my speech.

    I said: Then let evil descend to the earth;

Lo, let radiance live in the darkness.

And let that struggle endure upon the earth

Until the beginning of the end arrives.

And thus my face will be for my goodness alone,

And on earth, my curse and my peace.

It was a dream: I awoke from it to a voice

With an ancient echo and far-reaching intent:

Nothing more wondrous was possible than what

Was; so submit to my wisdom and my order.

    ت تجدها مشلولة الإلهام

    That is my universe: ask your own self who you are;

You will find its inspiration paralyzed.

And if you insist on nothing but headstrong defiance,

Then draw from your intellect the keenest sword.

And strike night and day with its two edges, and tear

With it the clouds' curtained chambers.

Then, when you approach my horizon, say: No might or power except through God.

And seek refuge from the delusion of dreams.

And I need only efface the light in your eyes,

Until it becomes sheer dusty gloom.

And suddenly, just where you were, you are drowning

In seas of doubts and illusions.

I said: O Lord, in the helpless one's contentment I have

A shade where it is sweet for me to dwell.

So forgive me, for my follies have vanished,

And pardon me if I lost my reins.

And spare me the evil of a thought that pictured me as

Master of might, whose decrees prevail.
