رنّrang فيin مسمعيmy ear نداءُthe call الحبيبthe beloved
منfrom بعيدafar فخلتهso I thought it منfrom قريبnearby
The beloved's call rang in my ear,
From afar, yet I thought it came from nearby.
وحبيبيand my beloved إذاwhen تعطّفshowed tenderness نادىcalled
حينماwhen لاnot يخافhe fears عينthe eye الرقيبthe watcher
And my beloved, when moved to tenderness, calls
When he does not fear the watcher's eye.
فأجَبتُso I answered النداءthe call منتهبَravished الروحthe soul
وفيand in مهجتيmy heart حنينyearning الغريبthe stranger
So I answered the call, my soul ravished,
And in my heart was a stranger's yearning.
وإذاand suddenly بيwith me أراهI see him منthrough خللthe openings الشبّthe win- (first part of 'window')
اك-dow (completes 'window') يبدوhe appears فيin فتنَةthe allure المحجوبthe veiled one
And suddenly I saw him through the openings of the win-
dow, appearing with the allure of one veiled.
ثمthen حيّاhe greeted بكفّهwith his palm وتوارىand vanished from sight
فأرانيso he showed me الغروبsunset قبلbefore الغروبsunset
Then he greeted me with his hand and vanished,
So he showed me sunset before sunset.
