ياO منyou who تمرّpasses بناbefore us الدنياthe world بأجمعهاin its entirety
يا من تمرّ بنا الدنيا بأجمعها
فلاand so not نرىwe see عندهاin its presence دنياworldly life ولاnor ديناfaith
فلا نرى عندها دنيا ولا دينا
O you! The whole world passes before us,
O you who pass by, the whole world passes us by
yet then we see neither worldly life nor faith.
So we see neither world nor faith
حبّاout of love لكمfor you إنif سلوناwe have forgotten كلevery شاغلةdistraction
حبّا لكم إن سلونا كل شاغلة
ولمand not نكنwe were عنكموof you يوماfor a day بساليناat all forgetful
ولم نكن عنكمو يوما بسالينا
If we have forgotten every distraction, it is out of love for you,
For love of you, if asked, every preoccupation
and never, for a single day, have we forgotten you.
And we were never distracted from you
وعندكمand with you علمناknowledge of us واللهand God ثالثناthe third among us
وعندكم علمنا والله ثالثنا
وإنand even if ظلمناwe are wronged وسميناand we are called مجانيناmadmen
وإن ظلمنا وسمينا مجانينا
You know us, and God is the third among us,
With you is our knowledge and God third between us
even if we are wronged and called madmen.
And if we do wrong and are called insane
أنحنare we نشغلwe are distracted عنكمfrom you لاno وربكمby your Lord
أنحن نشغل عنكم لا وربكم
وربناand by our Lord والذيand by the One who يعطىgives to المساكيناthe poor
وربنا والذي يعطى المساكينا
Could we be distracted from you? No, by your Lord,
Are we distracted from you? No, by your Lord
and our Lord, and the One who gives to the poor,
Our Lord who gives to the poor
ويجمعand gathers الشملthe company بينamong العاشقيناthe lovers رضاgood pleasure
ويجمع الشمل بين العاشقينا رضا
منهfrom Him وحبّاًand out of love لمنfor those who عاشواlived محبّيناas lovers
منه وحبّاً لمن عاشوا محبّينا
and reunites lovers, out of good pleasure
And brings together the loving hearts in acceptance
from Him, and love for those who lived as lovers.
From Him and love for those who lived loving
أبعدكمafter you? نعشقwe love passionately الدنياthe world ونطلبهاand we seek it
أبعدكم نعشق الدنيا ونطلبها
ونحنand we منكمof you وإنand even if كناwe were بعيديناfar away
ونحن منكم وإن كنا بعيدينا
Shall we, after you, love the world and seek it,
After you, do we love the world and seek it
when we are of you, even if we are far away?
When we are from you though far
عهدa pledge عليناbinding upon us وإنand even if طالgrows long الطريقthe road بناfor us
عهد علينا وإن طال الطريق بنا
ألّاthat … not نرىwe see غيركمanyone but you فيin القفرthe wilderness هاديناour guide
ألّا نرى غيركم في القفر هادينا
A pledge binds us, even if the road grows long for us:
A pact on us, though the road be long for us
to see none but you as our guide in the wilderness.
That we see none but you in the empty desert our guide
عهدa pledge عليناbinding upon us وإنand even if أكدتprove fruitless وسائلناour means
عهد علينا وإن أكدت وسائلنا
وغابand vanishes فيin التيهthe trackless waste دونshort of القصدthe goal حاديناour camel-driver
وغاب في التيه دون القصد حادينا
A pledge binds us, even if our means prove fruitless,
A pact on us, though our means fail
and our camel-driver vanishes in the trackless waste, short of the goal.
And get lost in the wilderness astray without intent
