Bow your head, bow your head, for the night has embraced you

And cast over you the robe of its darkness.

Bow your head, for life in your darkened heart

Has died, buried alive amid its wreckage.

    ه فلا تذكري أسى أيّامي

    O daughter of the wasteland, its sand-laden winds have torn you;

So do not recall the sorrow of my days.

And huddle in the depths of night until

Dawn shines from behind its clouds.

Huddle right here, and do not open your mouth

With words newly devised or repeated.

And let the night pass, just as it came,

And wear a robe of mourning from its darkness.

And let me listen to its bewildered whisper

Between the eternities past and the eternities to come.

    فهو زادي وعدّتي وعتادي

    Do not clamor, nor chafe at my silence;

For it is my sustenance, my resources, and my equipment.

Here is the cup: drink it, and taste

The pleasure of death in the nectar's recesses.

    ها ونامي في حضنها واستفيقي

    Drink it, for you are the story of its world;

And sleep in its embrace, and awaken.

And ask it, for it knows your days

Since the two of you met upon the road.

Ask it, and do not cease weeping

Over the ruins of your hanged dawn.

The cup's story—you enacted it one day,

For you, like it, belonged to everyone.

When time within you was springtime,

Extraordinary, and you were the spirit of spring.

    هاء فابكى واستمتعي بالدموع

    The whirlwinds buried your fragrance, O foolish one;

So weep, and take pleasure in tears.

And if you wish to live on illusion,

Then sing before the candles go out.

Do not rebel against life, for withered are

The flowers of life in your palms.

You once had beauty and youth, but now

Nothing of these remains with you.

So forgive people if they leave you without

Looking back, for the light has died in your eyes.

And let memories feed on what was left

By the serpents of darkness in your lips.

    فاعذري العابثات والعابثينا

    There is no longer anything in you to delight the eyes;

So forgive the frivolous women and the frivolous men.

The fates of death have plucked your feathers and left

A dying body and a sorrowful spirit,

And remnants of a heart, and fragments of a soul,

And a ray imprisoned beneath the ashes,

And wreckage gnawed at by calamities,

    Oozing tears and moans.

So if the malice of beautiful women wears you down,

Then overwhelm their scheming with forgiveness and gentleness.

And if a dark-eyed beauty awakens your sorrows

And incites those who gloat over your ugliness,

Then mock her beauty and her youth,

And despise her for her many lovers.

Or admonish her, for many a she-devil among

You women has spoken and made the preachers weep.

Tell her of passion and companions,

And nights, and wine, and lovers,

And bodies you made wretched through separation,

And bodies you made happy through reunion.

Tell her of everything except love,

For you women have nothing but hypocrisy.

Tell her of the soft, frolicsome young man,

Base in his feelings, a swindler:

How he seduced you one night and turned away,

    Fleeing your spilled chastity,

Leaving your torn garment to the fire

And the fury of winds and yearnings.

Tell her, while the star of life still holds

A ray threatened by the dark of the moon.

Then vanish from the throng of the blind procession,

And live for sorrow and bowed-head silence.

Bow your head, bow your head, for the night has embraced you

And cast over you the robe of its darkness.

Bow your head, for life in your darkened heart

Has died, buried alive amid its wreckage.

    ه فلا تذكري أسى أيّامي

    O daughter of the wasteland, its sand-laden winds have torn you;

So do not recall the sorrow of my days.

And huddle in the depths of night until

Dawn shines from behind its clouds.
