Life had grown cheap to it,

And calamities had worn it down,

And its visions had bewildered it,

So it was no longer like other hearts.

And it was no longer anything but what

    The nights recount about it:

    Honey that surpassed bitter colocynth

In taste, and so was transformed.

I invoked protection for it with the Qur'an,

    And with the noble Hadith,

    From sorrow and humiliation,

And from the approach of autumn.

I invoked protection for it; thus ended,

    In illusion, the lifetime of torment;

    And grew longer than before,

In truth, the lifetime of longing.

A heart that built its life

On wishing for its appointed end,

And so did not entrust its fate

    To passion or to hope;

And did not entrust its fate

    Except to its own end.

    So its purity was blessed

With sorrow by the hand of God.

I asked it about its wishes,

And it said to me, “I sold them

To a buyer—if you saw him,

You would say, ‘I was made to forget them.’”

    I marveled at the buyer:

What is he like, I wonder?

    And the ingenious seller

Says to me, “Or do you see?”

And around me wandered, like a phantom,

An old man whom calamities had whittled down.

And in his hands were vipers,

    Whose food consisted of hearts.

I asked him what his name was,

And he said, “This is Time.”

    And his form appalled me,

For he was wholly made of ordeals.

And my heart said to him,

    “When are wishes lost?”

    His condition answered it:

“The loss of wishes is wasting illness.”

    ورثتُها عن أبي

    O heart, indeed, these wishes

    I inherited from my father;

    So will wasting illness be,

    After wishes, what I seek?

O my Lord, what need have I

Of a longer span of life,

While in the earth lies my rest,

    After hope has ended?
