Over it, the meanings of extinction were poured

by the shadows of sorrowful, dreadful stillness.

    And darkness wrapped its contours,

wrestled by the light until it vanishes.

When darkness comes to it, it almost

flees; if it murmurs, darkness does not answer.

A desolation before it terrifies the dark,

    enigmatic as an unfamiliar ray.

And memories wail in its silence,

so gloomy existence takes fright at them.

    Terrifying in shadow, chilled,

autumn winds run riot within it.

It shares with me an ailment in the ribs,

with sleepless fire and thirsty, eerie strains.

    It questions me, crucified

upon an altar of everlasting bleeding:

“When did you last meet the departed,

among them the healers of the frail patient?”

I lower my head until the silence clamors

and weeps over the blind darkness.

    It questions me, bewildered,

about the sweet, carefree little girl,

her light veiled from my gaze,

    her music and cooing forbidden.

It asks me about you, O my flower,

O soul of my plaintive melodies.

Then the evening winds recite to it

the poem of my despair and sorrows.

Its verses are cries of madness,

and my sighs its meter and rhyme.

God be with it whenever the winds buffet it,

and whenever wounds awaken in its sanctuary,

and whenever evening phantoms embrace it,

and whenever morning birds exchange laments with it.

God be with it, forsaken in the open,

    stained with sorrow and lamentation.

God protect it from you and what you have wrought

    upon its divine, fragrant blossoms.

And you—God be with you, O thought

to which I fly with broken wing.

The year has passed, O my thought of beauty,

O fountain of my wandering days.

The year has passed—ah, would that it had not passed

    in this single form.

The storms of sorrow tear me apart,

and the lifeless room chokes me.

And joining me to my cares are

the phantasmagorias of our vanished days,

scattered in the recesses of the place,

reminding me of the everlasting story.

    متوّجَةٌ القصة الخالده

    Phantasmagorias, dead and alive;

    crowned is the everlasting story,

shattered like the hopes of the hungry,

shrouded in the dust of nothingness.

I circle them as the Magi do

when the idol's perfumes stupefy them.

And I pour songs all around them,

their melody ablaze, their notes bewildered.

As though their echoes in the dark

were searching for an ear that has not slept.

Phantasmagorias like birds in a thicket,

torn apart by the storm's fury.

The calamities of time pass over them,

so their frightened spirit bends them.

And in their depths, cares lie hidden,

and their slithering serpents slip forth,

    starved, craving dreams,

drenched in the blood of emotion.

And in the world of thought, their like

    encircle my trembling thoughts.

And you—and you are love and beauty,

and my death-knell among the meanings of life—

And you—and you are dreams and youth,

you live in a world I do not see.

Within me, from my longing to meet you,

is a frenzy whose blaze consumes my life.

Ah, alas, alas for a little song

    in chains, strangled by lips.

I want to give you its melodies to drink,

    but God's decree mocks me.

I shall weep for you until the tears die

in my eyelids, and illusion in my mind.

I shall weep for you until the road grows clouded—

the road of my life before my eyes.

I shall mourn you as the tale of a martyred love

that died in its blossoming cradle,

    and go where time goes,

to the brimming harbor of eternity,

to a hollow in the expanses of extinction,

a guest of the First and the Last.

I shall go, with a kiss upon my lips

that the tyranny of extinction will kill,

and in my hands a hope—I fear

for its spirit against the assaults of fate.

By love, wondrous in its sorrows,

upon your heart, Hebraic in its purity,

if I die, go to my room,

and do not sprinkle its wasteland with weeping.

For your eyes were not made for tears,

and your soul was not created for misery.

There I shall be, beyond the earth,

greeting your existence from my grave,

and telling those who changed my story,

and wringing my tear from their sorrow.

If they ask me whom I love,

    a deeply prophetic echo replies:

    “There, where life surges

and light kills itself in darkness,

lives she who scorned her heart

and cast it into the mire of clay.”
