مكانتي أصغر من حقّي

وحاجتي أكثر من رزقي
My standing is less than my due,
My status is less than my right,
And my need exceeds my sustenance.
And my need is more than my livelihood.

And the Creator's wisdom in His creation—
The wisdom of the Creator in His creation -
Its depths reach beyond my own depth.
Its depths are farther than my depths.

People - this one's garment is silk,
And that one complains of rags to rags.
While that one complains of patch upon patch.

Yet his mind and art are wondrously unique.

Destinies veiled in the unseen,
Fates predetermined in the unseen are veiled
And wisdom that has baffled creation.
And a wisdom that has confounded people.

وفي يدي غلٌّ وفي عنقي
I wore away my days at its door,
I wasted my days at its door,
With a shackle on my hand and on my neck.
With bitterness in my hands and grief around my neck.

حيران بين العقل والحمق
I knock upon it, crying for help, complaining,
I knocked, crying out, complaining -
Bewildered between reason and folly.
Perplexed between sanity and madness.

Yet it neither healed my anguish nor wiped away
But I saw no sympathy nor did anyone dry my tears
My tears, nor listened to my knocking.
Or listen to my knocking.

So I returned, with sorrow within my ribs,
So I returned while regret burned my innards
And a bitter choking lump in my throat.
And bitter sorrow choked my throat.

I came to not desire any need
More than freedom from bondage.
More than the freedom of emancipation.

So let the sun shine with its radiance,
Let the sun shine with its lights
Or let it vanish from the horizon's stage.
Or let it disappear from the horizon's stage -

It is all the same, so long as what I desire
It's all the same as long as what I want
Lies above the broad, open reaches of my paths.
Is above the vast, open space of my roads.

And let the days hasten on their way,
For the goal of all days, however long,
Or let them move feebly and gently.
Is my goal, and excelling comes with racing ahead.

كغايتي والفضل للسّبق
For the days' destination, however they race,
That which I exaggerated in lamenting
Is like my own, and the honor lies in arriving first.
I found one day without any longing.

My yesterday, whose passing I mourned to excess,
While my present draws far from its nearness -
I once met it without longing.
From the tomorrow veiled from my horizon.

And my present, despite its nearness, is farther
Than tomorrow, veiled from my horizon.
