If I were to weep for laden caravans, my longing would be stirred

by Layla’s caravans high in the valley—the two valleys.

From every curtained camel litter look out at us

gracious, fair-skinned women, whose like are few.

    عَلَيهِنَّ فَينانُ الغُصونِ ظَلِيلُ

    The beholder likens them to oryx in a grove;

above them, a dense-branched tree casts shade.

Their choicest woman is al-Hayjumānah; with her

are kindness and a welcome for us, were we greeted.

And true-hearted young men—over them I have pitched

a tent in the desert’s barren waste, swaying

as a tethered colt circles, his longing stirred by

horses upon the ridge, in a far-distant place.

The sons of Kaʿb and Mālik’s various clans met

in an affair like a sword’s forepart—momentous indeed.

You see each broad-armed lion of a man,

    a bare-limbed, supple-gaited horse trotting beneath him,

a radiant one among the youths, who thrills to generosity,

as a keen, polished sword quivers in the right hand.

As though the full-grown horses, when our whole company pressed hard,

were a troop of ibex, with more ibex behind them.

On them ride the sons of al-Muqāʿis; the steeds are fully grown,

fine chargers among dark bays, with neighing voices.

As though splashes of red dye lay upon their horsemen—

fresh blood, and musk flowing over their throats.

Whenever they emerged from death’s engulfing depths, they were driven back

to death by one formidable on both sides, casting shade.

So they left no man among ʿĀmir to raise his voice,

    nor any women without wailing.

They left Baḥīr and al-Dhuhāb; over the two

were thickets of birds, with anklets on their legs.
