The dwellings stirred the yearning lover to journey—

Old campsite traces and signs that linger still.

The burying winds and ever-renewing time wore them down,

Leaving them like a tattered sheet of parchment,

    Al-Harithiyya's, before separation carried off

Them, while she had no wish to part from me.

Swaying like ostriches suspended by their necks.

An Egyptian cloud, wind-slanted, its lightning spreading wide

Over Ashaba, then Zarud, then al-Aflaq.

It tore open the shelters of the wild cows with young,

So they take cover among the thickets and foliage.

You see the channels of each ravine's outfall,

Their streams rushing from their overflowing fullness.

As though the flood-outlet of every soft-soiled hollow

Were given some precious cloth with fringes,

Woven in Busra and al-Mada'in, spread out

For sale on the day the markets are thronged.

So I halted my she-camel there, and she moaned yearningly,

Longing for the evening journey, yearning to the utmost.

I let loose a she-camel headlong in her speed, as though she were—

When her lower belly seemed about to burst—

An autumn-grazing wild ass, stripped of his cloak by spring,

From the lush hollows of al-Dana; about him wrapped

The lowlands' brome-grass, as he pressed on in furious haste.

His throat-veins and aorta clamor, as though,

When singing late at night, he were being throttled.

Gaunt, slender as bows of sara-wood.

And her saliva, when she is roused, seems like

A cup a cupbearer decants for a drinking company:

Unmixed wine, through which you see the vessel's bottom,

Stealing a man's reason before a moment passes.

For its pleasure he forgets his deep-rooted self-restraint,

Remaining between sleep and head-bowed silence.

You see the wild cows there, walking back and forth,

Like the ʿIbadi folk in their leather boots.

They browse by night on dense herbage, dew lying upon it,

And every trailing spray and belt of herbage.

    I have descended to rain-fed pasture where dew had settled;

They lap its lingering moisture from their mouths.

Of wagers, and tales of gambling and racing.

A lion, and the coward's back teeth seem to lengthen,

Shimmering like a pool upon a windy day,

    غالٍ غَرائبُهُنَّ في الا فاقِ

    Woven by Duwad and the house of Muharriq;

Their rare specimens are costly across the horizons.

And I gave them myself, and a mare sound in her shank-bones,

Sleek, with battle-mettle and a fiery spirit.

Like a bare spear-shaft; her fear has been eased

By gentle treatment and the noblest bloodlines.

And a solid, trusty lance, one of Rudayna's spears,

In the hands of a young warrior, a daring charger,

Armed, charging toward the hard-pressed and proclaiming his name,

When the nock's two prongs will not align.

Keen-speared on every day of encounter.

They do not stare when the battalion holds back

Like camels weighed down with their loads.

Without any failing or discord among them.

And the horses know who drenches their breasts

With blood like spilled red ʿandam dye.
