As for cutting fodder and grooming, if this is a favor
Neither friendship nor wiping, if it's a favor upon me,
held over me, I am neither fodder-cutter nor groom.
For I am neither a friend nor a wiper.

And as for a friend's excuses, I
As for the excuses of a friend, I will convey them,
shall grasp them, even if you cannot speak plainly.
If you are not eloquent.

And one rancorous friend I shunned,
And one with a defect from a friend I avoided him
and another I treated courteously, though he harbored hatred.
And another, I got along with him and he is a conceptor.

I endured him deliberately, for the best, after
knots and wood-borers had appeared in his trunk.
Weakness appeared in his leg and moderators.

And one broken in fortune and base in character
And a wretched, presently, and sinister nature
I struck harshly, while hands were laden.
I avoided, for evil, and the palms are pollinators.
