ماhow اِقبَحَugly التَزهيدَpreaching renunciation مِنfrom واعِظٍa preacher
يُزَهِّدُurges renunciation الناسَthe people وَلاand does not يَزهَدُrenounce worldly things
How ugly is a preacher's call to renunciation,
How ugly is the asceticism of a preacher
How repulsive is the call to abstinence from a preacher,
Who urges people to renounce the world, yet does not renounce it himself.
Who preaches asceticism to people, but does not practice it himself
Who urges people to renounce the world while he does not renounce.
لَوif كانَhe were فيin تَزهيدِهِhis preaching of renunciation صادِقاًsincere
أَضحىspent the morning وَأَمسىand spent the evening بَيتَهُhis home المَسجِدِthe mosque
If he were sincere in his preaching of renunciation,
If he were truthful in his ascetic preaching
If he were truly sincere in his preaching of asceticism,
The mosque would be his home, morning and evening.
His home would be the mosque night and day
His home would be the mosque, by morning and by evening.
وَرَفَضَand rejected الدُنياworldly life وَلَمand did not يَلقَهاencounter it

And he would reject the world and have no dealings with it,
He would renounce the world and avoid it
He would have rejected the world and never sought it out,
Nor would he strive and ask for gifts.
He would not strive and seek material gain
Neither striving for gain nor soliciting favors.
يَخافُfears أَنthat تَنفَدَrun out اِرزاقُهُhis provisions

وَالرِزقُand sustenance عِندَwith اللَهِGod لاdoes not يَنفَدُrun out
He fears that his provisions will run out,
He fears his provision will run out
He fears that his provisions will be exhausted,
Yet sustenance in God's keeping never runs out.
Yet with God provision never runs out
Yet provision lies with God and never runs dry.

Sustenance is apportioned among those you see;
Provision is apportioned, as you see
Livelihood is apportioned among all whom you see;
White and black alike receive it.
The white and the black obtain it equally
It is attained by the white and the black alike.
كُلٌّeach one يُوَفّىis given in full رِزقَهُhis sustenance كامِلاًin full

Each is given his sustenance in full,
Each receives their provision in full
Everyone is paid their provision in full measure,
Those who refrain from toil and those who toil.
Whether they struggle or do not exert effort
He who refrains from effort, and he who toils hard.
