    وَقَدّك غُصن مائس مُتأَوِّدُ

    Your glances among lovers are a sword of Indian steel;

And your figure is a swaying, gently bending bough.

And your full moon, on beauty's horizon, has beneath it

    Midmorning suns whose lights blaze.

    وَدُونك ريمٌ ناعسُ الطَرف أَغيَد

    And in your mouth, pearls form a neatly strung necklace;

And a drowsy-eyed, supple gazelle ranks beneath you.

And your waist, O sweet-natured one, in my hand

Could almost be knotted, so supple is it.

And you are a beauty whose form God wondrously fashioned

With surpassing beauty, all of it uniquely gathered in you.

So bring it—pour me the wine despite a reproacher

Who descends into blame's valley on your account and ascends its heights.

For my days have grown serene under a reign

Whose Tawfiq in Egypt has rightly guided judgment.

God bless him—a chief whose lofty edifice

Is built upon justice in those lands.

And his compassion toward all people is an innate trait

To which every person in the assemblies bears witness.

And the rain of His Highness's two hands, at every moment,

Pours over the petitioners' land, making it prosper.

Take heed, O sons of the homelands: indeed, your prince

Has favors beyond counting and beyond bounds.

So fulfill your duties toward him, and repay

His efforts with gratitude that knows no bounds.

And say sincerely with me in your prayers:

May this exalted marshal long endure for us.

For in governance he has followed the finest course,

With excellence for which he is envied throughout the realms.

O son of Egypt's Khedive, indeed our hearts

Are folded and unfolded around the love we owe you.

And how could it be otherwise, when you have revived our souls

With abundant giving that makes a wellspring sweet?

And through your faithful promise you have granted us that by which

You rise above all mankind and are praised.

So if you are absent, the souls' hosts hasten

To you, spurning bodies without you.

    تَكاد لِعَجزي عَن مَديحك تَجمد

    And but for you, my poetic gift would not have yielded verse;

It nearly freezes at my inability to praise you.

And but for you, the tongue would not have revealed what is enfolded

Within a heart whose love is steadfast.

So live, striding proudly in the robe of kingship, and ask

Of time whatever you desire, for you are upheld.

And gain, O crown prince, from sweet praise

Always that which brings contentment, O Muhammad.

For glad tidings have spread everywhere at your arrival, by which

Servant and master attained what they hoped for.

So may you ever remain, as deputy for the best of masters,

An excellent minister for his decrees, firmly supported.

And may kingship's lips keep reciting this chronogram:

'Through my Tawfiq, with justice, Egypt has glory.'
