Woe to my soul from hostile Time,

And from my morning encounter with the scoundrel, corruption's pillar.

Kaaba of vice, mine of baseness and wickedness,

The Devil's ally at every gathering.

He is like a donkey bearing volumes,

Large ones, whose rudiments he does not know.

No traveler at evening or morning can match him.

And make him join the people of Lot and ʿAd.

And feigned blindness to guidance and right conduct.

He ascribed action to nature, disbelieving in

The Exalter, the Abaser, Lord of His servants.

So may He repay him in this life with disgrace and humiliation,

And Hell's fire on the Day of Return.

He is like zero in arithmetic, so he has no worth

In our eyes when he stands alone.

He will not mend his ways except through cursing,

    With rebukes, harshness, and obstinacy.

His might deluded him; so the final outcome

Of his affair was his humiliation beneath slapping hands.

I long refrained from harming him, out of contempt,

So he transgressed in matters as this continued.

And he overstepped his bounds and rushed on,

And his evil grew as the qatad thornbush grows.

And he sought combat, though he was a coward,

With a lion of al-Shara, a gallant champion of the fray.

So his heart filled with terror born of illusion,

And he became remorseful, wounded at heart.

And if he returns to the fray out of conceit

Of his own, he will lie upon the dust like a lifeless thing,

For, from exquisite rhymes, I shall shoot at him

With arrows that leave him like ashes.
