بِالبشر في مصر لاحَت غرّة العامِ

تَزهو بِنُور مَليك للحمى حامي

تَزهو بِنُور مَليك للحمى حامي

With joy in Egypt, the year's bright brow has dawned,

With the glad tidings, the new year dawned in Egypt

Radiant with the light of a king who protects the realm.

It glows with the light of a sovereign who protects the nation

تَزهو بِنُور مَليكٍ غَيثُ راحته

تَزهو بِنُور مَليكٍ غَيثُ راحته

في الكَون طُول المَدى بَينَ الوَرى هامي

في الكَون طُول المَدى بَينَ الوَرى هامي

Radiant with the light of a king, the rain of whose palm

It glows with the light of a benevolent sovereign

Pours among humankind throughout the world for all time.

Whose comfort encompasses the universe and all people

هُوَ الخديوي الَّذي أَوطانُه نَشرت

هُوَ الخديوي الَّذي أَوطانُه نَشرت

لِلفَضل في عَصره مَطويّ أَعلام

لِلفَضل في عَصره مَطويّ أَعلام

He is the Khedive whose lands have unfurled

He is the Khedive whose flags

The once-folded banners of excellence in his age.

Were unfurled with merit in his era

وِللتمدّن مدّت باعَها وَإِلى

وِللتمدّن مدّت باعَها وَإِلى

أَوج العُلا سارعت مِن غَير إِحجام

أَوج العُلا سارعت مِن غَير إِحجام

And extended their reach toward civilization, and toward

And for civilization, extended its reach

The summit of greatness they hastened without hesitation.

Rushing to the peak of glory without hesitation

وَأَحرَزت شَأو تَقديم لَها شَهدت

وَأَحرَزت شَأو تَقديم لَها شَهدت

بِهِ البَرية مِن عرب وَأَعجام

بِهِ البَرية مِن عرب وَأَعجام

And she attained a height of progress, attested on her behalf

And achieved prominence by pioneering

By humankind, Arabs and non-Arabs alike.

Witnessed by both Arabs and non-Arabs

فَيا لَهُ مِن طَبيب بِالعِلاج مَحا

فَيا لَهُ مِن طَبيب بِالعِلاج مَحا

ما كانَ في جسمها مِن فَرط أَسقام

ما كانَ في جسمها مِن فَرط أَسقام

So what a physician he is, who through treatment erased

What a healer he is with his treatment

The overwhelming ailments that had beset her body!

Of all the terrible illnesses that plagued it

وَأَنَّها بِسَداد مِنهُ قَد بلغت

وَأَنَّها بِسَداد مِنهُ قَد بلغت

ما أَمّلت مِن سعادات وَإِكرام

ما أَمّلت مِن سعادات وَإِكرام

And through his sound guidance she has attained

And with his competence it has attained

The joys and honor she had hoped for.

All the happiness and honor it hoped for

وَأَصبَحت في سَما علياه طالعُها

وَأَصبَحت في سَما علياه طالعُها

بِالسعد مقترناً في دار إسلام

بِالسعد مقترناً في دار إسلام

And in the sky of his exalted rank, her rising star has become

And its rising star in the highest heaven

Conjoined with good fortune in the abode of Islam.

Is paired with good fortune in the abode of Islam

وَكَيفَ وَالنيل فيها حَيث يَأمره

وَكَيفَ وَالنيل فيها حَيث يَأمره

يَجري بخصب مَديد وَافر نامي

يَجري بخصب مَديد وَافر نامي

And why not, when the Nile within her, wherever he commands it,

And how can it not when the Nile, where he commands it

Flows with enduring, abundant, growing fertility?

Flows with abundant, copious fertility

وَكُلُّ شَيء بتقدير العَزيز لَها

وَكُلُّ شَيء بتقدير العَزيز لَها

يَبدو بِأَحسن تَنظيم وَإِحكام

يَبدو بِأَحسن تَنظيم وَإِحكام

And everything, through the mighty ruler's planning for her,

And everything in it by the Almighty's decree

Appears in the finest order and perfection.

Appears in the best order and arrangement

وَلِلمَسَرّات في أَرجاء ساحتها

وَلِلمَسَرّات في أَرجاء ساحتها

مَواسمٌ ذات آلاء وَإِنعام

مَواسمٌ ذات آلاء وَإِنعام

And for rejoicing, throughout the reaches of her domain,

And throughout its realm for celebrations

There are seasons rich in blessings and bounty.

Are seasons of blessings and boons

وَلَم يَكُن قَبلَهُ فيها يُطاف بِهِ

وَلَم يَكُن قَبلَهُ فيها يُطاف بِهِ

مِن المَباني سِوى أَهرام كفرام

مِن المَباني سِوى أَهرام كفرام

And before him, nothing there was toured

And before him no edifices were toured

Among buildings save the pyramids of Kafram.

Other than the towering pagan pyramids

وَالآن كُلُّ مَكان فيهِ منتزهٌ

وَالآن كُلُّ مَكان فيهِ منتزهٌ

زاهٍ لتنوير أَذهان وَأَفهام

زاهٍ لتنوير أَذهان وَأَفهام

And now every place contains a pleasure garden,

And now every place has a scenic resort

Resplendent, to enlighten minds and understanding.

Illuminating minds and intellects

وَفيهِ كُل مشيد دون منظره

وَفيهِ كُل مشيد دون منظره

ما في جَميع بِلاد الروم وَالشام

ما في جَميع بِلاد الروم وَالشام

And in it every lofty edifice surpasses in splendor

And in it, all construction beyond its sights

All that stands throughout the lands of Rum and al-Sham.

None in all of Rome or Syria can match

وَهَذِهِ مصر قَد أَثنت عَلَيهِ بِما

وَهَذِهِ مصر قَد أَثنت عَلَيهِ بِما

يَحلو مكرّره في خَير أَيام

يَحلو مكرّره في خَير أَيام

And Egypt here has praised him in words

And this Egypt has praised him for

Sweet to repeat on the finest of days.

Sweet words it keeps repeating in the best of days

وَغرّدت وُرقُها بِالشكر فيهِ عَلى

وَغرّدت وُرقُها بِالشكر فيهِ عَلى

عَدلٍ بِهِ قَد تحلّى جيدُ أَحكام

عَدلٍ بِهِ قَد تحلّى جيدُ أَحكام

And her gray doves have warbled their thanks in it for

And its leaves twitter thanking him

Justice that has adorned the neck of his decrees;

For the justice with which he was finely adorned

وَهمة لم تَزل أَركانُ دَولته

وَهمة لم تَزل أَركانُ دَولته

تَعلو بِها فَوق كِيوانٍ وَبهرام

تَعلو بِها فَوق كِيوانٍ وَبهرام

And resolve—the pillars of his state have never ceased

And the resolve with which the pillars of his state

To rise through it above Keywan and Bahram;

Rise above all others like Kyan or Bahram

وَيقظة نسخت آيات حكمتها

وَيقظة نسخت آيات حكمتها

ما كانَ للجهل من غيّ وَأَوهام

ما كانَ للجهل من غيّ وَأَوهام

And vigilance, the signs of whose wisdom have effaced

And the vigilance that transcribed the signs of its wisdom

The error and delusions that ignorance harbored.

Countering ignorance and misconceptions

لا زالَ في كُل عام دهره أَبَداً

لا زالَ في كُل عام دهره أَبَداً

يَلقاه فيها بثغر مِنهُ بسام

يَلقاه فيها بثغر مِنهُ بسام

May his days, year after year and forever,

May he live each year of his time forever

Greet him in her with their own smiling lips,

Meeting it with a radiant smile

ما اِزداد بِالحَزم تَوفيقاً إِلى عَمَلٍ

ما اِزداد بِالحَزم تَوفيقاً إِلى عَمَلٍ

يَزدان فيهِ بِتَأييد وَإِقدام

يَزدان فيهِ بِتَأييد وَإِقدام

As long as, through resolve, he gains greater success in work

Increasing in wisdom for deeds

In which he shines with support and boldness;

He pursues vigorously and intently

أَو أَقبل المَجد بِالبُشرى يؤرخه

أَو أَقبل المَجد بِالبُشرى يؤرخه

عامٌ بيمن خديوي مصره سامي

عامٌ بيمن خديوي مصره سامي

Or glory arrives with glad tidings, recording its date:

Or good fortune heralds with glad tidings

A year exalted by the good fortune of the Khedive of his Egypt.

A blessed year of Egypt's noble Khedive
