Who will shelter me from the wiles of the worst adversary,

but a lion, noble in combat?

Who will shelter me from injustices, except

the justice of a heart free from rancor?

Who is my champion against the enemies but a gallant man,

whose meteors have scorched the livers of the accursed?

O my people, is there among you a man of resolve

who can be counted on among you to repel adversaries?

Come to me early, O my neighbors, with an answer,

and rescue me from painful torment.

My breast grew tight, and I found no champion for myself

but the cave of safety, the best of forbearing men.

O my prince—may my soul be your ransom—be generous to me

with what I seek, despite the base man.

How could I fear Time's turning aside

in favor of a fool intent on advancement,

and be repaid by the nights with treachery,

while I am safe in the abode of bliss?

No envious man prevails in the house of a full moon,

who will not tolerate the injustice of a vile oppressor.

What is hoped for is attained only by a person

who, like me, rose to eminence through one like this sage.

I care not, now that I have strung necklaces

from an unwounded heart, in gratitude.

I care not, since Fortune told me, 'Record the date:

All good comes from union with Abd al-Halim.'
