بحجاهthrough his wisdom سَماrose high رَفيعlofty العَمادِthe pillar
بحجاه سَما رَفيع العَمادِ
مَركزcenter الفَضلexcellence وَالعُلاand eminence ذوpossessor of الأَياديbenefactions
مَركز الفَضل وَالعُلا ذو الأَيادي
Through his wisdom, he of the lofty pillar rose high,
With pillars rising high into the sky
The center of excellence and eminence, the giver of benefactions.
A center of virtue, charity and aid
دافعwarding off الجدبdrought عَنfrom بحيرةBuhayra مَصرEgypt
دافع الجدب عَن بحيرة مَصر
وَسِواهاand places other than it بِهمةwith resolve وَاجتِهادand diligence
وَسِواها بِهمة وَاجتِهاد
Warding off drought from Egypt’s Buhayra,
Who pushed back drought to fill the Nile
And elsewhere, with resolve and diligence.
Through effort and deed made the land verdant
جابرٌmending كسرَهاits brokenness بِتَوزيعby distributing ماءwater
جابرٌ كسرَها بِتَوزيع ماء
هُوَit أسُّfoundation الغنىprosperity بِهاin it لِلعِبادfor the people
هُوَ أسُّ الغنى بِها لِلعِباد
Mending its brokenness by distributing water,
Jabir who by water distribution did break
It is the foundation of prosperity there for the people.
The drought, source of bounty to all who prayed
قائمfulfilling بِالفُروضthe duties للريّfor irrigation فيهاin it
قائم بِالفُروض للريّ فيها
ناشرُspreading الخصبfertility فيin جَميعall البلادthe lands
ناشرُ الخصب في جَميع البلاد
Fulfilling the duties of irrigation there,
Upholding obligations to irrigate the land
Spreading fertility throughout all the lands.
Spreading prosperity throughout its breadth
زادَهُmay He increase him اللَهGod بَهجةjoy وَسُروراًand gladness
زادَهُ اللَه بَهجة وَسُروراً
بِأَمينthrough Amin قُطبpole الذَكاintelligence وَالرَشادand right guidance
بِأَمين قُطب الذَكا وَالرَشاد
May God increase his joy and gladness
May God increase his joy and delight
Through Amin, the pole of intelligence and right guidance.
Through the trusted polestar of wisdom and guidance
فَهوَfor he بِالسَبقof precedence وَالمَعاليand high honors جَديرworthy
فَهوَ بِالسَبق وَالمَعالي جَدير
وَهوَand he أَولىmore deserving برفعةof elevation وَاِزدِيادand further advancement
وَهوَ أَولى برفعة وَاِزدِياد
For he is worthy of precedence and high honors,
For he deserves precedence and ascendance
And he is more deserving of elevation and further advancement.
And is most worthy of stature and rise
وَبِمَدحيand through my praise لَهُof him تشرّفwas ennobled قَدريmy standing
وَبِمَدحي لَهُ تشرّف قَدري
وَمِنand from الدَهرTime قَدindeed بلغتI have attained مردايmy desire
وَمِن الدَهر قَد بلغت مرداي
And through my praise of him, my standing was ennobled,
My praise of him adds honor to my verse
And from Time I have gained my desire.
And from fate I have reached my goal
حَيثfor حليتI adorned بِالثَناءwith praise عَلَيهِof him
حَيث حليت بِالثَناء عَلَيهِ
جيدَthe neck نَظميof my verse فيin طارفnewly acquired وَتلادand long-held
جيدَ نَظمي في طارف وَتلاد
For with praise of him I adorned
Since I adorned it with his accolades
The neck of my verse, new and old alike.
The prime of my verse in its valleys and hills
وَالرضاand satisfaction عَنهُwith him قالsaid ليto me فيهِabout him أَرّخcompose a chronogram
وَالرضا عَنهُ قال لي فيهِ أَرّخ
مَظهرٌMazhar باحspoke openly مجدُهhis glory بِسَدادof sound judgment
مَظهرٌ باح مجدُه بِسَداد
And satisfaction with him told me: compose his chronogram—
And being pleased with him I dated and marked
Mazhar—his glory spoke openly of sound judgment.
