عانَدتني صُروفُ هَذا الزَمانِ
ياO لَقَوميmy people, help! وَبالغتand went to extremes فيin هَوانيmy humiliation
يا لَقَومي وَبالغت في هَواني
The vicissitudes of this age have opposed me,
The vicissitudes of this time have opposed me,
O my people, and have gone far in humiliating me.
Oh my people, and caused me great humiliation.

هَلwhether رَأَتنيthey saw me مجرّباًseasoned فيin طعانspear-fighting
هَل رَأَتني مجرّباً في طعان
Why are they always intent on killing me?
Why are they always bent on killing me?
Have they seen me seasoned in spear-fighting?
Have they seen me as an expert spearman?

Repel them from me, O valiant one, for my body
Ward them off from me, O protector, for my body
Cannot withstand the vicissitudes of time.
Cannot withstand the vicissitudes of time.

I, in my anguish, cannot face them,
I and my grandfather cannot face them,
For in fighting them, my steed has stumbled beneath me.
For in their war my stallion is like a mosquito.

So be gentle with my plight and show compassion,
So be gentle with my condition and show compassion,
And confront them with a keen sword and a spearpoint.
And confront them with sword and spear.

Their fire is quenched by a flood of resolve
Their fire will be extinguished by your flood of determination,
From you, sharper than the sword of beauties’ glances.
Stronger than the glance that seduces the lovesick.

Beat the drums of joy in the throne room
You came hastening to it amid festivities.
When you come seeking it in the festival.

O my prince, may you always remain the best defender
O my prince, you remain the best supporter
For a broken man suffering calamities.
For one broken by events and suffering.

When you deliberately drew away from him,
Every companion, close and intimate.
Each intimate turned distant and estranged.

Other than your lofty and eminent position?

You do not care if you pardon a people
Who have unleashed racehorses to harm him.
Who unleashed in harm the horses of gambling.

Live happily in honor and safety.
Live happily in honor and safety!
