The nightingale of joy sang in Egypt,

Upon a supple bough in the garden of delight.

And the boon companion passed around pure, choice wine,

From a little cheek forever rose-tinted.

And he served it mixed with the nectar of lips,

Sugar-sweet—on it even an ascetic caroused.

And the foolish watcher withdrew from us,

And the proud beloved brought happiness through union.

And we devoted ourselves to revelry, yet

With a dignity to which propriety bore witness.

And from time, our comforter, we seized

A praiseworthy chance it offered for rejoicing.

And in closeness we unfurled the banners of union,

And the banner of joys was upheld among us.

And we raced our horses on a course

Where our lead in offering congratulations was assured.

And we rose to attend the wedding feast of a sun,

Whose edifice stands lofty in the heights of honor.

What a noble daughter of a sovereign she is—

He stands peerless among the kings of the world.

And he is a vast sea of noble deeds,

Sweet to drink from in Egypt—may he never cease to bring others to water.

He has lulled the people to sleep in the shade of safety,

Spread by justice throughout every land.

And clothed them in a mantle of prosperity,

Renewed each day throughout his reign.

And the kings of eloquence praised him,

With an account traced back to noble deeds,

An account passed down through trustworthy narrators,

Who transmitted it from his father, then from his grandfather:

Namely, that seekers of bounty, without asking,

Received from him a downpour that never runs dry.

O breeze of joys, by God, refresh

Our souls yourself, and keep wafting through us.

For through the good fortune of al-Mansur, the Khedive's son-in-law,

The nightingale of delight sang throughout his nights.

And to gladden him—may I be your ransom—compose a chronogram:

A sun of glory was led as a bride to a full moon of nobility.
