تَحلَّىbecame adorned بِإِقبالby the advent of المَليكthe king سَعيدِSa'id
تَحلَّى بِإِقبال المَليك سَعيدِ
مِنof الملكsovereignty فيin شوّالShawwal أَحسنُthe fairest جيدِneck
مِن الملك في شوّال أَحسنُ جيدِ
The advent of King Sa'id adorned
He was endowed with the auspicious reign of King Sa'id
The fairest neck of sovereignty in Shawwal.
In the month of Shawwal, the best and finest era.
وَساعَدتand favored الأَقدارُthe fates مصرَEgypt بِطالعٍwith a rising star
وَساعَدت الأَقدارُ مصرَ بِطالعٍ
سَعيدauspicious وَرأيٍand judgment فيin الأُمورaffairs سَديدsound
سَعيد وَرأيٍ في الأُمور سَديد
And the fates favored Egypt with a rising star,
The fates assisted Egypt with a fortunate horoscope,
Auspicious, and sound judgment in affairs.
Sa'id and sound judgment in all affairs.
وَلماand when تَولاهاhe took charge of her أَزالَhe removed عَناءَهاher suffering
وَلما تَولاها أَزالَ عَناءَها
بِحَزمwith firmness وَعَزمand resolve فيin النِضالthe struggle شَديدfierce
بِحَزم وَعَزم في النِضال شَديد
And when he took charge of her, he removed her suffering,
When he assumed rule, he removed her troubles
With firmness and fierce resolve in the struggle.
With resolve and determination in fierce struggle.
وَبدّلand he exchanged مِنهاfrom her فيamid الملماتcalamities رَوعَهاher terror
وَبدّل مِنها في الملمات رَوعَها
بِأَمنٍfor security عَلىover طُولthe length of الزَمانtime جَديدnew
بِأَمنٍ عَلى طُول الزَمان جَديد
And he exchanged her terror amid calamities
He transformed her terrors in adversities
For new security lasting through all time.
To security for ages anew.
وَعَدلand justice يَقومrises المشرفيُّthe Mashrafi sword بِنَصرهin its support
وَعَدل يَقوم المشرفيُّ بِنَصره
وَجَيشand an army جَسورٍdauntless للخصومagainst the foes مبيدannihilating
وَجَيش جَسورٍ للخصوم مبيد
And justice upheld by the Mashrafi sword,
With his support, justice is established by Al-Mushiri,
And a dauntless army that annihilates foes,
And a brave army that destroys all enemies.
وَبَأسand might بِهِthrough it أَوطانهhis lands عزَّgrew exalted شَأنُهاtheir standing
وَبَأس بِهِ أَوطانه عزَّ شَأنُها
وَذلَّand was humbled لَهاbefore them فيin الحَربwar كُلُّevery عَنيدdefiant foe
وَذلَّ لَها في الحَرب كُلُّ عَنيد
And might through which his lands rose in honor,
With his might, he honored his homelands
And every defiant foe was humbled before them in war.
And humbled before him in war each obstinate one.
فَلاso may ... not زالَcease فيin ذاthis الشَهرmonth عيدانtwo feasts مِنهماamong the two
فَلا زالَ في ذا الشَهر عيدان مِنهما
لَهُfor him فيon سَريرthe throne الملكsovereignty أَبهَجُthe most joyous عيدfeast
لَهُ في سَرير الملك أَبهَجُ عيد
So may this month always hold two feasts, among them
So ceaseless are days of celebration for them both
His most joyous feast upon the royal throne.
For him, on the throne, a most joyous feast.
وَلاand may ... not برحcease النَجلthe son الأَصيلnoble-born موفقاًgranted success
وَلا برح النَجل الأَصيل موفقاً
لمرضاتهto please him ماas long as طابَwas sweet مَدحُpraise مجيدan accomplished poet
لمرضاته ما طابَ مَدحُ مجيد
And may the noble-born son always be granted success
And his noble heir continues successful
In pleasing him, as long as an accomplished poet's praise is sweet,
In pleasing him, for as long as praise is sublime.
وَماand as long as قالَsaid مَجديMajdi فيin ولاهdevotion to him مؤرّخاًgiving a chronogram
وَما قالَ مَجدي في ولاه مؤرّخاً
قَدindeed اِمتازَbecame distinguished شَوّالٌShawwal بِأَمرby the command of سَعيدSa'id
قَد اِمتازَ شَوّالٌ بِأَمر سَعيد
And as long as Majdi says in devotion to him, giving a chronogram:
And what Al-Majdi said in recording his rule—
'Shawwal has been distinguished by Sa'id's command.'
Indeed, Shawwal was distinguished by fortunes grand.
