لجهلكbecause of your ignorance البريةhumankind آثماa sinner
Take heed: some suspicion is a sin, so do not be
Beware, some doubt is sinful, so do not
A sinner through your ignorance of humankind.
In your ignorance become a sinner
فَعمّاfor, after قَليلٍa little while يَنجليwill clear غَيهَبُthe gloom الخَفاconcealment
وَتُصبحand you will become ياO هَذاyou there عَلىover السوءthe wrongdoing نادِماregretful
For soon the gloom of concealment will lift,
For soon the haze of doubt will dissipate
And you there will come to regret the wrong.
And you, my friend, will regret your evil assumption
وَسَوفَand will تَرىyou see أَنيthat I am همامٌa resolute man مُجرّبٌseasoned
وَأَنيand that I am أَمينtrustworthy لاnot أَخونI betray منادماa drinking companion
And you will see that I am a resolute, seasoned man,
You will see I am an experienced protector
And that I am trustworthy, betraying no drinking companion.
And that I am a loyal friend, never betraying companions
وَنَفسيand my soul وَإِنand even if ذلتit is humbled لديّbefore me عَزيزةproud
عَلىbefore الغَيرothers لاnot تَهوىit loves فَخوراًa boastful person مخاصماquarrelsome
And my soul, though humble before me, is proud
Though humbled, my soul remains dear to me
Before others; it loves no boastful quarreller.
Not vainly proud, nor hostile to others
وَسَلand ask إِنif جهلتyou do not know الناسthe people عَنيabout me فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I am
عَفيفٌvirtuous وَلاand not أَخشىI fear عَدوّاًan enemy مُقاوماopposing
And if you do not know, ask people about me, for I am
If ignorant people question me, know that I
Virtuous, and I fear no enemy who opposes me.
Am chaste, fearing no hostile opponent
فَحتامso how long تؤذينيyou hurt me بِأَمثالكwith your proverbs الَّتيwhich
تُشيرyou point بِهاwith them نَحويtoward me وَماand not كُنتI was ظالِماunjust
So how long will you hurt me with your proverbs, which
Yet still you hurt me with your insinuations
You direct at me, though I have done no wrong?
Though I have done no wrong nor acted unjustly
وَحتامand how long تُصغيyou listen لِلحَسودto the envious man وَلمand have not تَثقyou trust
بِقَولin a statement غَداhas become للصدقto truth طرّاًentirely ملازماbound
And how long will you heed the envious man, yet not trust
And you listen to the envious, mistrusting
Words that are now wholly bound to truth?
A truth that will forever prove loyal
