Silence is safer, except in praise of the Creator.

So praise Him, and turn away from cousin and neighbor.

This is the truth; turn away from all else, and do not

trust the words of liars and traitors.

And if you know God and have trust

in His grace, do not fear the aggression of the wicked.

And set a lock upon your mouth if you desire your own

deliverance; and endure torture by fire.

For silence, patience, and submission, O my hope—

through them the weak attained what the fierce could not.

As for tale-bearing, the Almighty has forbidden it

to humankind; so beware a tyrant's violence.

And the most foolish of people is a slanderer with a passion

for falsehood, injustice, calumny, and disgrace.

And a slip of the tongue has no cure

except death, if the Creator does not show kindness.

So guard your sorrowful heart against thoughts

that have led to the loss of souls and lifetimes.

And abandon your hope in family and offspring,

and in a close friend who follows the dictates of desire.

And reject eloquent speech, through which you gain nothing

in Egypt but humiliations and burdens.

And keep to silence until an age has passed

whose wicked have already risen above the virtuous.

And if a fault appears to you in your brother, do not

blame him; bear with him with the patience of free men.
