دِيوانَه وَعَلَيهِ في القَضا اِعتَمَدوا
Say to the emir, through whom those have prospered who sought
Tell the prince who has triumphed, he whom they frequented
His court and relied on him in judgment:
His court and on him in judgment they relied
ياO وافرabundant in الحَزمprudence فيin كُلall الأُمورaffairs وَياand O

O you of abundant prudence in all affairs, and O
O abundant in wisdom in every matter, and O he
You whose favors among humankind cannot be counted:
Whom countless among mankind extol

مَن لَم يَكُن فرّ منه هارباً أَحد
I have heard of slaves being distributed to
I have heard of the distribution of slaves to
Those from whom no one had fled as a runaway.
Whosoever had not from them a fugitive fled

فَرّ اِثنَتان وَعَبدٌ عاقه الرَمد
And I had four from among the people of Sudan;
And I had from among the blacks four
Two women fled, and eye inflammation incapacitated a male slave.
Two fled and a slave blinded by cataracts
وَلَيسَand there is not ليfor me الآنnow مِنهُمof them غَيرother than واحِدَةone woman

هِيَ العَجوز الَّتي مِنها وَهَى الجلد
And now I have none of them but one woman:
And I have now none left save an old woman
She is the old woman whose strength has waned.
She who is but skin and bones
فَامننso bestow a favor بِعَبدٍwith a male slave صَغيرyoung ثمthen جاريةٍa slave girl

So favor me with a young male slave, then a slave girl,
So favor me with a young male slave and a young
Young like him, untouched by deformity.
Girl like him, untouched by passion’s goad

And order Sulayman to hand them over, seeking reward
And order Sulayman, piously, to hand over
From the Guardian for the good in his deed,
What the Guardian judges right

So that I may be like one whose merchandise was returned
That I may be as one whose wares
To him after despair that had no end.
Were returned to him after despair of his capital prolonged
