O commander of the brigade, my patience is spent,

And my lifetime has passed in the hardship of waiting.

Whenever I hoped for honor, I was cast

By the turns of my fate into humiliation and contempt.

And I fell behind after taking the lead, but

Not in the race for renown and pride.

Was it for some fault that you chose to forget our bond,

Though it deserved to be kept and remembered?

Or did you make my recompense the breaking of a pledge

In which lay relief from my stumbling?

Or was it through inability to work for good

That you turned away from me, though you possess some power?

Can hope in you fail, while my praise

    Continues to grow and spread?

If you were my ally against fate,

I would have greater strength to triumph over it.

If you said that Zayd is worthy

Of promotion, the stem of my poverty would grow green.

So gain the reward through praise, and relieve

Me of distress, O you whose beacon towers high.

And await an opportunity on which will hinge

    Prosperity after this hardship.

And speak, if you wish, of what might

    Bring benefit in these lands.

And with some post restore a servant,

Through efforts that heal his brokenness.

Since the printing house has now passed

To a director who operates the steam-powered press.

There, my commander, I had hoped

To attain the second rank of esteem.

And now, but for you, I would be close to falling

Into abysses of despair or ruin.

How could I not? It had not spurned me, and

I was the one who left it against my will.

So I donned mourning clothes, grieving for it,

Like its kin, and this became my garb.

Would that I had died before there vanished

Its full moon into the dark depths of oblivion.

Would that I had not printed there varieties

Of arts that heightened my self-delusion.

Indeed, what terrified me and crushed my bones was

Its abasement after eminence and renown,

And my descent from printing virgin thoughts

About the Khedive, wondrous in their originality,

And my settling for gathering twenty thousand,

Whose pearls look down upon the sun of day.

This, O commander, is the outpouring of a grief-stricken man,

    Full of cares and brooding.

So ward off calamities from him with a sword

Of keen edge, as though it were Dhu al-Fiqar.

And if you turn away from him, leave him

    To endure hardship and harm.

For in every circumstance he is content with you,

    Accepting whatever apology is offered,

Grateful for your kindly efforts, skilled

In praising you, thankful for your protection,

Confident that throughout all time he will enjoy

Your protection of his honor among mankind.

May God grant you and your sons greater favor,

Rubbing an envious rival's nose in the dust,

As long as I utter my opening words:

O commander of the brigade, my patience is spent.
