أَنكرتI denied مَعرفتنيknowing me (unclear form) لَدَيهِwith him وَناسيand my people
My life has passed remembering a friend who forgets me.
My life passed in the memory of an unfaithful one
I denied being known to him and to my people.
Who denied knowing me when we met and forgot

Would that the day had never been when love toyed
As if there was never a day when love played
Foolishly with a mind firmly anchored in guidance.
Foolishly with reason firmly guiding

Oh, how often counsels were wasted on me,
Oh how many sincere advice I lost
Of pure elixir and diamonds!
Of the elixir and diamond's essence

They were rejected; had you been rightly guided, you would have heeded them.
They were refused, if only you had heeded them
The fault is mine, not the gracefully swaying beloved's.
The fault is mine, not of the advisor

In upholding wantonness, you squandered a reputation
You lost your famed chastity in guarding it
That you had traced back to Ahnaf and Iyas.
And refused to emulate the chaste ones

O you who are deluded in what you claim,
O you deluded in your claims, congratulations
May it gladden you: you reached your goal after despair.
You attained your goal after despair

I have resolved to forget, in defiance
I decided to quit loving, differing
Of lovers' ways among the people.
From the ways of lovers among people

So pardon me, and do not reproach me, for I have found no
So excuse me and don't blame me, for I could not find
Full moon to console me, in spite of the envious.
A full moon to console me despite the envious

Yes, becoming attached in love to Ahaif
Who is sweet in character and breath!
He is of good morals and breath

In the creed of ardent love there is a clear text,
The religion of youth in it is clear guidance
Transmitted on the authority of the discerning:
Its transmission from the wise is true

The lover forgets the beloved if the beloved inclines
The lover asks about the beloved, when he wakes up
In pride toward a sinful, slinking talebearer.
Lost, to an sinning, treacherous guide
