I was told: You have praised every prince

whose virtues are mentioned in the verse collections.

Why, then, have you neglected to praise Ali—

Haydar, whose resolve is abundant and whose prudence is manifest?

    I said: I cannot describe a dignitary

beneath whom, among kings, stand Kisra and Caesar.

    لا يُدانيه في الشَجاعة عَنتر

    How could it be otherwise? He is the cub of a fierce lion;

Antar cannot rival him in courage.

O marvel of the age in every sense,

and exalted in rank in every gathering,

you are Qays in counsel—rather, you are worthier

than he of precedence in coming and going.

You are, in the realm of high honors, a chief

over Abu al-Fadl and his gallant son Ja'far.

And you have gained such qualities of right guidance

and sound judgment as no counting can encompass.

So remain in Egypt a refuge for seekers of bounty,

    winning praise in every community,

as long as Majdi's verse collection is adorned with praise

of you, resembling necklaces of pearls and jewels.
