أَقولI say لِفاتنٍto a charmer طالَhas lasted long اِفتِتانيmy infatuation
بِطَلعتهwith his countenance وَأَعجبهand delighted him اِفتِنانيmy artistry
I say to a charmer who has long held me spellbound
I say to a charmer whose charm long enthralled me
with his countenance, and whom my artistry has delighted.
with his looks and his beauty entranced me
وَسُرَّand rejoiced بِبُعدهat his remoteness عَنيfrom me رَقيبٌa watcher
سَفيهٌa fool لَيسَdoes not يَرغَبwish فيfor التَدانيcloseness
And a watcher rejoiced at his keeping far from me—
while the ignorant rejoiced in keeping him from me
a fool who has no wish for closeness.
a fool with no desire for intimacy
وَعلّمهand taught him التجنيunjust treatment وَالتَجافيand aloofness
فَأَصبَحso he became جاهِلاًignorant فيin الحُبlove شانيa hater
And he taught him to wrong me and keep his distance,
He taught him to shun and keep his distance
so, ignorant of love, he became hostile to me.
so he became an ignoramus in love destroyed
وَكَمand how many مِنof مَوعدa promised meeting أَمّلتُI hoped for مِنهُfrom him
فَلَمyet did not يَسمَحallow بِتَبليغto fulfill الأَمانيthe wishes
And how many a meeting I hoped for from him,
How many meetings did I hope for
yet he would not let my wishes be fulfilled.
but he would not allow my wishes conveyed
وَبالغand went to extremes فيin الجَفاcoldness وَالهجرand desertion لَماwhen
بِسَهمِwith the arrow of لحاظِthe glances of مُقلتهhis eye رَمانيhe shot me
And he went to extremes in coldness and desertion when
And he was extremely aloof and estranged when
he shot me with the arrow of his eye's gaze.
my languishing glance's arrow struck me
وَتاهand acted haughtily عَلىover الملاحthe beauties بِوَردِwith the rose of خَدٍّa cheek
وَقَدٍّand a figure لاnot يُقاسis compared بِغُصنwith a branch of بانa bān tree
And he vaunted himself above the beauties with his cheek's rose
He was lost in the beauty of a soft cheek
and a figure no branch of the bān tree could match.
and a slender shape like no branch of narcissus
وَأَصمىand slew مُهجةthe heart of المَفتونthe enthralled lover ظلماًunjustly
بِعادلwith an upright قامةٍstature كَالخيزرانlike bamboo
And he unjustly slew the enthralled lover's heart
He unjustly deafened the ears of the infatuated one
with an upright stature like bamboo.
with a figure as straight as a reed
أَأَطمَعcan I hope مِنكَfrom you فيfor وَعدa promise بوصلٍof union
وَدينُكwhile your creed مطلُputting off صبٍّa lovesick lover غَيرnot جانيguilty of wrongdoing
Can I hope for a promise of union from you,
Should I hope for a promise of union from you
when your creed is to put off a blameless lover?
when your religion is endless pouring rain ungathered
أَماindeed وَهَواكby love for you ماليI have no عَنكَaway from you صَبرٌpatience

Indeed, by my love for you, I cannot endure your absence;
As for your love, how can I have patience from you
and how could I bear being without you, or falter?
and how can there be patience from you or even procrastination
فَتِهso be haughty وَاهجرand desert me وصُدَّand turn away فَلَستُfor I do not أَسلوcease loving

وَلَوeven if جرّعتَنيyou made me drink كَأسthe cup of الهَوانhumiliation
So be haughty, desert me, and turn away: I will not cease loving,
So shun, be estranged, and turn away But I will not complain
even if you make me drink the cup of humiliation.
even if you make me drink the cup of humiliation

But do not turn from me to another,
But do not tire for another's sake
for no one else suffers for passionate love.
for another cannot endure my passion

And I have no partner in my passion
nor have you an equal in beauty, O young gazelle.
and you, Rasha, have no equal in beauty

And I have nothing to ease some of my anguish
And I have nothing to relieve some of my sorrow
save tears the color of crimson.
except tears the color of dark red rose

And you have tested me and found in me
And you have tried me and seen in me
a discerning man who has come to know your subtleties.
an intelligent lover who knows the meanings

Might there be a visit in the depths of night
Is there then a moment in the darkness of night
whose auspicious rising would gladden my heart?
that makes happy the one its good fortune befriends?

And might there be a moment when my reproacher
Is there a glance in which my lover
dies of rage at the hour of congratulations?
dies of anger at the time of joy?

Then I shall not say my youth has passed
There I will not say my youth has passed
in vain, in infatuation with the beautiful.
like vapor confused by beauty

And in the cause of pleasure I dedicate my heart
And I will stop my heart for pleasure's sake
to you, whether it obeys my command or defies me.
whether it obeys or disobeys me

So cease this aloofness now,
So stop this aloofness now
for you are not safe from misfortunes.
for you are not safe from accidents

And behold, I have counseled you; so take me
And here I have advised you, so take me
as an intimate friend, and shun every hater.
as a friend, and stop pursuing anyone who bears enmity

For no one but me remains constant in love,
For no one endures passion like me
and all beauty, O graceful swaying one, is fleeting.
and all beauty, Myas, is fleeting
