وَمِنكَand to you دَناdrew near بَدرُfull moon الهَناbliss فيamong كَواكبِهْits stars
Good fortune came to you with glory in its processions.
Good fortune attends you with honor in its processions,
And the full moon of bliss drew near you among its stars.
And from you the full moon of joy rises in its orbit.
وَفُزتَand you gained بِتَشريفٍwith an honor عَزيزٍprecious لِمَنزلٍfor a home
أَضاءَتshone لآليpearls جيدِهits neck بِمواهبهwith his gifts
And you gained a precious honor for a home
You have won a precious honor for a position,
Whose neck's pearls shone with his gifts.
That made eminent by Divine aid his noble forehead.
سَعىhe proceeded فيin رَبيعٍRabi‘ فيin مَساءevening غُروبهits sunset
لِحاديon the first وَعشرينand twenty بِتَحقيقby verification حاسبهits reckoner
He made his way in Rabi‘, in the evening at sunset,
It strove in a springtime whose sunset was
On the twenty-first, as its reckoner verified.
The twenty-first, to fulfill its account.
فَطابَتso became pleasant لَكَfor you الأَوقاتُthe times فيin ظلthe shade of دَولةa reign
لِكُلfor every امرئperson فيهاin it صَفاءُpurity مَشاربهhis drinking sources
So your days grew pleasant in the shade of a reign
So times were pleasant for you in the shadow of a state,
Where every man's drinking sources are pure.
Wherein each person has the serenity of his drinking-place.
وَكَيفَand how وَقَدand indeed أَولاكَhe bestowed on you مِنهُfrom him رِياسةًleadership
بِهاwith it اِزدانwas adorned فيin مَصرEgypt أَجلُّthe most exalted of مَناصبهhis offices
And how could it be otherwise, when he bestowed leadership upon you,
And how should it not be so, when he has appointed you to leadership,
With which the most exalted of his offices in Egypt was adorned.
By which the noblest of positions are adorned in Egypt?
فَقُمتso you stood مَعwith النوّابthe deputies فيin كُلevery محفلٍassembly
بسنةby the tradition of عَدلٍjustice كَسرويٍّKhosrow-like وَواجبهand its duty
So you stood with the deputies in every assembly,
So you stood with the deputies in every assembly,
Following the tradition of Khosrow-like justice and its obligations.
With a sunna of justice like a lofty cypress.
وَقُوبلتand you were received بِالتَمييزwith distinction مِنهُfrom him تَأسِّياًin emulation
بِأَحمَدof Ahmad فيregarding المَولىthe master سَميّكyour namesake صاحبهhis companion
And you were received with distinction by him, in emulation
And you were met by him with favor,
Of Ahmad's conduct toward the master—your namesake, his companion.
As Ahmad to his lordly namesake.
وَذَلِكَand that تَوفيقٌdivinely granted success مِنfrom اللَهGod خَصّهhe singled him out
بِهِwith it وَحدهhim alone فيناamong us لِتَأييدto strengthen جانبهhis side
And that is success from God, who singled him out
And that is a divine guidance which He singled out
Alone among us to receive it, to strengthen his side.
For it and for succoring His side.
فَبُشراهso glad tidings to him مخدوماًas a master وَبُشراكand glad tidings to you خادِماًas a servant
يَجلُّis too great عَنfor الإِحصاءcounting بَعضsome of مَناقبهhis virtues
So glad tidings to him as master, and glad tidings to you as servant.
Give glad tidings to the prince and yourself as his servant,
Some of his virtues are beyond counting.
Whose virtues are too numerous to be counted.
وَبُشرىand glad tidings لِمجديto Majdi حَيثwhen قالhe said مُؤرّخاًrecording the date
لَقَدindeed زارَvisited إسماعيلIsmail منزلthe home of راتبهhis Ratib
And glad tidings to Majdi, when he said, recording the date:
And glad tidings to my Majdi wherever the historian says,
Indeed, Ismail visited the home of his Ratib.
"Ismail visited the abode of his salary."
