دَهري وَغيّر بِالهُجران أَلواني
From beauty in full bloom, after union, I was turned away
After union with the beautiful beloved, my life changed
by my fate, which changed my colors through estrangement.
And separation altered my conditions

عَمداً بسهم لَياليهِ فَأَصماني
Nor did it stop at cruelty, but shot at my heart
Not content with aloofness, he aimed his piercing arrows
deliberately, with the arrow of its nights, and struck me dead.
At my heart, rendering me speechless

And in its eyes I have no fault to incite it
I have no fault in his eyes except my love and concealment
to destroy me, save my love and my secrecy.
To provoke him to shun me

Away from me, O Time! My endurance has failed,
O life, my skin is worn out, my bones cracked
and my bones are crushed; love's torment has demolished my frame.
And passion demolished my edifice

And sickness besieged the body's fortress, breaching
Illness besieged the castle of my body
its walls; a builder turned away from mending them.
Its ramparts collapsed, beyond repair

You had promised not to betray me, yet

You broke your oath and denied knowing me

My reprover passed by me one day, as was his custom,
My critic passed me by one day as usual
but saw not even my shadow among my neighbors.
But saw no trace of me amongst my neighbors

Befallen the wounded lover among you?"

Has an adviser, after this waywardness, guided him,
After this absence, should I advise him
out of concern for him, toward renunciation and consolation?
Out of concern to abstain and be tranquil?

Or die from intense longing and sorrow?

Misery as his mortal body faded away"

over a young gazelle whose beauty has no equal,
For a head of hair that has no equal

Never would I forsake my abasement before his might,
Never! I aspire not from his lowliness to glory
or the praise of Hasan in a book of verse.
Or praise of perfection in the anthology of verse

by statecraft made splendid through his mastery.
Are adorned by his flawless governance

He has become the delineator of the realms of a great realm
vast, upon a plane of good fortune and beneficence.
On foundations of favors and benevolence

And within it he has upheld truth through his virtues,
He has supported truth among its virtues
with wise judgments, knowledge, and proof.
With wisdom, knowledge and proof

so that he outshone Quss and Sahban.
Distinguished from foolishness and nonsense

How then can I rein in my praises of him
and from spreading their fragrant scent among mankind?
And cease spreading the scent of his glory?

Free of exaggeration and disparagement

yearning for its mate from atop the branches,
Yearning for his company above the branches
