For you, O Tawfiq, the feast has arrived with victory,

And has come to you with good fortune, O star of the age.

And the tongues of humankind have praised your eminence,

With pleasing, exquisite verse and with prose.

So what a chief minister you are, whose least qualities

Are so abundant that they surpass all reckoning!

Qualities—if kings were adorned with some of them,

They would attain the good renown they long for.

Qualities through which a father's joy has grown,

Whose realm has glory enduring until the Resurrection.

His realm inspires awe in east and west,

Through which the lands walk proudly in robes of pride.

And how could it be otherwise, when within it you have become

Heir to his throne, with the unanimous assent of slave and free?

And through you, the days there have become, for its people,

Seasons of feasts returning with gladness,

And sincerely express the love for you that

All hearts have cherished throughout the ages,

And proclaim your noble deeds in rulings,

Upon which justice shines in prohibition and command.

So may glory's host in Egypt never cease serving

Your radiant countenance, in secret and in public.

And may the face of kingship, at every moment,

Smile upon you, O sons of Ismail.

And may the verses praising your father never cease

To be recited to the people with deliberation and thought.

And may no poetry be spoken of anyone but you, for you

    Deserve abundant praise and thanks.

And may you remain—may God protect you—in every assembly,

The most august marshal to occupy the chief minister's seat.

For you are more deserving of congratulations than the multitude,

And especially at the feast of the fast-breaking table,

And especially at a feast of most auspicious rising,

That came after the month of fasting with blessings and reward.

And its crescent shone before the eyes of humankind,

With the brightest radiance, outshining the full moon's bright brow.

So I recited my graceful opening as a chronogram:

For you, O Tawfiq, the feast has arrived with victory.
