نجازٌ بِوَعد ناسخٍ لِوَعيدِ
For every praiseworthy act of faithfulness in love,
For every loyalty in love there is a praiseworthy achievement,
There is fulfillment of a promise that annuls a threat.
A promise fulfilled that annuls every threat.

وَفي كَبدي الحرَّى الخدود حَديد
And how can sleep come to my eyelid,
How can my eyelids ever be at peace
While the cheeks are iron in my burning liver?
When in my liver there is burning agony, cheeks like iron plates?

And that is only from rejection, which has reduced it
This is but from the one who repulsed me
To sickness, striving to increase it further.
And sent me to an illness that seeks to grow.

If I were visited in sleep—though sleep is forbidden
If he who is forbidden to me roams in my sleep
To me—by an apparition, it would come bearing something prepared.
As an apparition that brings me news,

Though, from passion's torment, I cannot
Still I cannot, because of my burning agony,
Rise for someone near, or someone far away.
Rise for one near or distant.

And she who shuns me blames me for loving Layla,
My exclusivity in the love of Layla blames me,
And one like me heeds no dullard's blame.
But one like me pays no heed to sluggish blame.

And yet she hopes for affection from me, and without it
Ordeals of a calamity grievous to the lover.
Stand stern tribulations for an ardent lover.

لصبٍّ بنبل الغانيات شَهيد
And estrangement, in lovers' eyes, brings no harm
Estrangement is no harm to lovers -
To a lovesick man martyred by the beauties' arrows.
A youth is martyred by arrows from singing girls' tents.

Not everything that appears to be idolatry
To forgetting love in every devotee's creed.
Inspires negligence in the faith of every devotee.

These are traditions of youth that have been transmitted
With its chain of narration, from ʿAmir and Labid.
With their chains of authority, from Amr and Lubayd.

عَن النصح إِن النُصح غَيرُ مُفيد
So leave off reproaching me for love, and turn away
So cease your blaming me for love, and be just,
From counsel: counsel is of no use.
For advice is of no benefit.

And I, in the sweetness of accord and its bitterness,
I am surely content with what every discerning person approves.
Am content with what satisfies every reasonable person.

For I do not seek—even if they shed my blood—
I do not wish, even if they shed my blood,
To empty my heart of Zabid's daughters.
That my heart be devoid of the daughters of Zubayd.

Nor do I complain of those who repel or betray me,
Nor through sleeplessness that kills and destroys.
Or the slayer and annihilator.

And pelt every rebel with patience's meteors.
And cast at it the stars of patience, every falling star.

Flowing like a raincloud or cavalry in early dawn.

With righteous agriculture flourishing in its harvest.

Raising him in spite of the nose of the obstinate.
