O Sa'id of the age, O life-giving rain for humankind!

O sovereign of the age, O lion of the fray!

Indeed, my verses, which have kissed

the palm of justice and attained their desire,

and become safe from their fear

beneath your banners, among the tents,

now, because of what has befallen them, have

an eye whose tears flow freely.

And despite this sorrow, they never falter

in their praise of the Khedive and the governing order.

And they are confident, O you of lofty summits,

that at the meeting they will suffer no wrong.

And indeed, they refrained from complaint until

they saw your face—O excellent leader!

So pass judgment on them as you wish, and say:

“These have indeed won my pledge of protection.”
